My Admissions Officer recommended me for NAPS, according to what she said. And I have a feeling thats probably the path I will have to take on my way to the Academy.

What is the probability of one getting into the academy from NAPS?

If you successfully complete NAPS and desire to attend USNA, you are virtually guaranteed an appointment. It's a good deal. NAPSters generally do very well at USNA and in the USN/USMC.

USNA1985 is absolutely correct! NAPS or Foundation are both EXCELLENT programs where you are provided a 'bridge' year. These students are virtually guaranteed an appointment if they keep their grades up, etc.

Please do not feel as if you 'aren't good enough.' Just the opposite! In 2005 I had 2 candidates one was offered Foundation and the other NAPS. BOTH were going to DECLINE and were quite upset they hadn't been offered full appointments to the Class of 2009. It took some convincing and finally they saw that it was just an extra year and if USNA and a career in the military was their ultimate goal they were given a great opportunity.

Both are still at USNA and graduating this year; just took them that one extra year.

What do they have in common at USNA? Both are near the top of their class and I hear raving reviews about how they have performed in the brigade.

Agree. I've never known any NAPSter who regretted his/her time at NAPS (or Foundation). You get a great head start on academics. And, with NAPS, you get a head start on the military requirements as well. Most mids look to NAPSters for help with uniforms and other military stuff for the first few months. After that, people will forget you went to NAPS/Foundation unless you mention it.

NAPS/Foundation are great programs that are designed to enable those who may need a little extra academic prep to be successful at USNA. And they are very successful. If you want to attend USNA, this is a great start. Yeah, it's an extra year, but a year well spent because it also virtually guarantees that you'll be able to handle the rigorous USNA academics.

Worst case . . . you hate it. So, you walk away to the rest of your life with more education and the certainty that you made the right decision for you.

I give thanks to you all for consoling me in my misconceptions. I was honestly distraught when I was told by my admissions officer that I had been recommended for NAPS, as I did not seek to go that path at first. I also did not know whether to take it as a blessing or curse. But yet, within the greatest bounds of reason and opportunity I have been enlightened yet again by my guides here. Thank you all.

Many candidates would give their eye teeth to be offered NAPS/Foundation. It is a recognition that a candidate is someone who, based on leadership, character, athletics and/or ECAs is someone USNA really wants. However, USNA isn't sure that the person's academic prep is sufficient to ensure they will be successful at USNA. Thus, the extra year with college-level courses and lots of mentoring/tutoring, etc. to make sure that candidate will succeed at USNA.

If you have aspirations of USNA, I STRONGLY encourage you to accept NAPS/Foundation if offered. Yes, it may delay your dream for a year. But it will make your dream more likely to become reality. You'll be sure it's what you want and confident you'll succeed.

And, trust me, NO ONE at USNA looks down at NAPSters or Foundation students. Quite the opposite. One of my best friends at USNA went to NAPS. He went on to major in Systems Engineering (one of the toughest majors at USNA) in which he achieved at better than 3.0 GPA (which is considered brilliant for that major). He went on to be accepted to the sub service (which highly values academics) and then to become XO of a sub, before retiring from the USN.

Feel good that USNA appears to want you and wants you to succeed.

Also, ma'am, if I may ask, how do the nominations process go for those at NAPS. I had read on the information page of my MOC that they do not prioritize candidates from any preparatory school and that they must 'ask' the respective service academy for a means of getting a nomination.

You don't need a nom to get into NAPS. Once at NAPS, I believe you are required to apply for MOC noms. However, if you don't get one, USNA will still find a place for you at USNA if you want to go and successfully complete NAPS.

Yes, at NAPS or any academy prep program you are required to apply to all eligible nomination sources. Most take care of that in the summer prior to starting their prep program, so it is complete and one less thing to worry about.

Best of luck to you!

please explain

My daughter got excepted to NAPS today!
She has already applied for MOC, Both Senators and Vice President for nominations.
My question,
Are these requests for nom's the ones that will be used in placement for next year 2011? This would be when she would graduate(lord willing) from the prep school.
Or,,,while attending the Prep school, would she have to re-apply in the fall of 2010 AGAIN for the nominations?
thanks!

As she will be a prospective member of the Class of 2014, her MOC nominations this year (if she attend prep school) will not be used this year.

She will need to apply for nominations again next year.

Once appointed (BTW just for clarity here, you're appointed, not accepted) to the Prep School, the candidate will have to apply for a nomination for her ultimate appointment to the USNA. She will not need the "Top", number one appointment from her MOC, she'll just need an appointment, one of the nine left the MOC has besides their number one appointment candidate.

Congratulations, it's a huge honor and a great way to get into the academy. :thumb:

Prep School

Hi...

My son is currently at USAFA Prep School and he had to re-apply for nomination from our senators, representatives and the Presidential. Some of them required he resubmit the letters of recommendation and new essays. He will also interview with them via a conference call.

The academy recommended they get as much of the application process done before entering the prep school.
