Has anyone from Minnesota figured out how Senator Al Franken's nominations will work this year? Since the election recount lasted so long, he still doesn't have a senate website or a contact listed. My ALO and BGO don't even know how to apply for his nominations this year...

Hmm, some people would say that I'm crazy for giving this info out to a competitor, but those people aren't Academy material.

Contact Senator Franken's St. Paul Office at (651) 221-1016; ask for the nominations coordinator. They will send you an email with the required paperwork.
 
No worries... I already have a presidential nomination. I'm just playing all my cards. :thumb: Thanks for the information! I'll call tomorrow.
 
Just FYI, remember there are unlimited noms for Pres, but only 100 appts. that is why you need to cover all of your bases. Typically there are over 450 noms every yr, thus, it is not a done deal.

Don't forget to apply for a Veep nom too.
 
I am applying for all possible nominations. As I said, I applied for and received a Presidential nomination over the summer. Since then, I applied for a VP nom and am working on my packets for Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, and Representative Michele Bachmann. :thumb:

Someone please correct me if I am wrong (and I would be OK with that - have been wrong in my life more than I have been right!) but - I think all you need is one nomination - from any source - to be considered for an appointment.

I have dealt with this issue while sitting on our congressional district's nomination committee. Every once in a while - would offer a nomination to a student, who would contact us back and graciously announce that they had recieved a senatorial nomination - and that they would like to give up their congressional nomination so an alternate could get a nomination.

I was always impressed when this would occur.

I do not think your chances of an appointment are increased by either the number of nominations you would get - or the source of those nominations. If I am correct - then accumulating nominations, to me, only sounds greedy - and denies the opportunity for other deserving students to be honored with a nomination.

Then again, I could be wrong - and would very much like to be told that.

Actually - what you suggest makes sense but is not really accurate. While it is true that you only need one nomination to get an appointment, the reality is that if you receive more than one nomination you are in more applicant pools so you have a better shot. Example: You have a nom from a Senator and a nom from a Rep. You are thus on two slates (the Senator slate of 10 names and the Rep slate). Let us assume each slate is a competitive slate. That means the Academy will rank you based on your whole candidate score. Let us now assume your WCS puts you as #1 on your Rep slate and #4 on your Senator slate. By giving up your Rep nom you now may be in a pickle. The SA will appoint the highest candidate on each slate. Being on more than one slate gives the SA options. If the MOCs provide the SA with a ranked slate then the WCS will not come into play (but the vast majority are done as competitive slates).

While it seems altruistic to drop a nom as you described, theoretically it can hinder ones odds. There are many nuances so this can change ... for instance, if your Senator provides a ranked slate and you know that you are the principal nominee - then by all means withdraw from other slates. In the case of the op - a Presidential nomination is limited in that they get several hundred nominated but are not allowed to accept more than 100 with a Presidential nom. If the op is ranked as candidate 101 on the Presidential slate and does not have another nominating source, the op may not get an appointment. There are other complicating factors that will only confuse the issue. The best advice is to apply for all nominations for which a candidate is eligible. This allows not only for the WCS anomalies I mentioned above but also allows the Academy to evaluate your file for a nom on many slates. By the way - the source of the nom in irrelevant, a nom is a nom. How the SA manages that nom may differ. For instance, no more than 100 Presidential can get an appointment, or if your Senator ranks your slate and gives you a ranking of 8 chances are slim but if you're on your Reps slate also and the rep does not rank then your WCS might give you a slot of #1 and then you're in. It all depends on so many factors that to try to explain it can become cumbersome. And, every scenario might be just a little different so little changes in the scenario might change the options/result. Again best strategy is apply for as many noms as you qualify. If/when you get an LOA and/or an appointment or nomination ranked as principal nominee - then you would be safe to relinquish other noms.

I know of a young lady that received a JROTC nom and removed her nomination application from the MOC office because she knew you only need one nom (noms had not yet been determined but she had completed her application). She did not get an appointment. She would almost certainly have received a nom from the MOC. She called the SA in Spring inquiring about obtaining an appointment from her JROTC nom and was told that her WCS was not ranked high enough to obtain an appointment on the JROTC nom and she had no others from which they could consider. The MOC slate had been turned in months earlier. She did not get an appointment to the Academy that year even though her stats were stellar ... fast forward one year ... she is now a 4° at USAFA - a year later - on a MOC nom.

Clear as mud, right?

2011Mom: the almost exact same thing happened to my son's roommate! He did a year at Civ College before going in the the 2012 class. Ouch. He like the Civ College and was AFROTC there (not scholarship), but had wanted AFA since age 9. Was a tough blow for him.
