Do colleges take into account that you have a ROTC schlrship for admissions purposes?

I just found out that I have been awarded a NROTC scholarship, but I haven't received acceptance letters from colleges yet. I listed my top 5 schools on the NROTC application, but will the schools be informed that I have received a scholarship and if so, will this increase my chances of being accepted into those schools?

When did you find out just curious? And how? And I have heard it can some, but not a ton.

I qualified for this thing called ISR (Immediate Scholarship Reservation), so basically my application doesn't have to go through the NROTC admissions boards and I'm guaranteed a scholarship to whatever school I choose.

There is no absolute answer to the question. It varies from school to school. The party line is that the admissions process is completely separate and independent from the ROTC selection process. However, there were some colleges my son applied to where the unit representative informed us that, once he found out he received the scholarship, he would immediately inform the admissions office and that it was greatly considered. Others informed us it was not considered at all. Generally speaking, the more selective the college, the less weight was given to the NROTC scholarship selection. Some NROTC units will tell you that it can only help if that school is your #1 choice on your NROTC application.

The bottom line is, it depends.

How do you qualify for this?

Ok, thanks for the info. And 2012cadet, your credentials look good enough, but seeing that you don't have SAT scores, I can't tell you for sure. I know that you need a minimum of around 1820 for all three sections of the test to be even considered for the ISR.

Congrats on your ISR! My son was also given an ISR and is currently with the MIT, Harvard and Tuft unit. Good luck with your college apps.

I thought this would have an impact on my son's acceptance to his two reach schools but it did not. We found out he earned his NROTC scholarship several weeks before we heard from his top choice school (where his NROTC scholarship was assigned). We spoke with his PMS and freshman advisor for NROTC and they made sure that the university admission folks knew he had the scholarship. His stats had him well qualified for the college but sure enough, they turned him down...and I was surprised because he was just free money to them. Same with his other reach and second choice school.

Based on our experience...no it doesn't help. I tell parents and students in this situation to use a match school as their school of assignment for NROTC scholarships because the stress of waiting to hear if his scholarship would transfer to the school where he was accepted was harsh. Thankfully, it did transfer and he loves his college and NROTC unit.
