is the lifestyle and routine the same as a service academy or is there more or less freedom?

You get ALOT more freedom and get paid more at USMAPS than the actual academy. I don't know about the other prep schools though.

what are the main classes that a cadet would learn to prepare them for life at a service academy?

My DD was a CGAS program prepster at MMI last year. She would say she had ALOT more freedom than this year at USCGA. Most of her weekends were free unless she had obligations such as Band or sports. Also, she was paid alot more last year

I don't remember her ever talking about classes that prepared her for life at a service academy, other than ROC cycle (recruit): learning to wear a uniform, learning to recognize rank, how to march, etc. The classes were your normal freshman classes for USCGA: chemistry, physics, english, military history, math. At MMI, keeping physically fit was self-motivated (if you weren't in any organized sports).

At NAPS, you will be taught Chemistry, Calculus, English, History, and also how to get around every single rule in the regulations.
