At what point in the process is a potential LOA provided? Reason asked is because we are holding off as long as possible to do the CFA but would like to make sure we have done everything necessary to get a LOA, if one is to be forthcoming.

Are there minimums for the CFA?

The candidate is primarily a runner and so hasn't developed strong upper body strength but is working on it.
Current practice scores are as follows;

BB throw;57 feet:eek:
pull-ups; 9
shuttle;9.0
sit-ups; 70
push-ups 25-30:frown:
mile run; 6:00

How long should we wait to do the official CFA without delaying the process?

Yes, there are minimums but I don't believe they are availible to publicly.

If the candidate is a male then those push ups really need to go up.

Mixed information. We have been told by our MALO that USMA is not issuing LOAs this year without the CFA, but I have seen one on this forum that was issued subject to passing it.

I'm not sure about LOA (I have a friend who has already received one), but he needs more push ups for sure; I'd say at least fifty (any senior male in high school should be able to do fifty push ups) and a six minute mile for a runner isn't very impressive either. But how important IS the CFA for them? Is it make or break for admittance?

Getting an LOA right now probably won't do you any good. Each year there are kids who get an LOA but not an appointment because they can't pass the CFA.

Two comments regarding your scores -
1. There is a disconnect between your pull ups and pushups. Make sure you are doing your pullups correctly.

2. At West Point you will be required to take and pass the Army Physical Fitness Test during Beast and each semester. Failing to pass the test can lead to dismissal. Therefore, they really need to see that you will be able to consistently pass this test.
The ARMY minimum for pushups for an 18 year old male is 49. Of course at West Point they frown on the minimun and expect you to score the maximun which is 71.

Passing the CFA is an Admissions REQUIREMENT.
it is how one becomes Physically Qualified.

This is very true and does happen. A Firstie in my company was separated and left yesterday for failing two APFT in a row and now has to go home with a $275,000 bill.

Nobody knows how heavily the CFA weighs in but if you do poorly I would say it counts for a lot because they don't want to accept those who will end up being separated due to physical reasons. Also doing poorly on the CFA can show a lack of commitment since the CFA is common knowledge and candidates can practice as much as they want.

Just a reminder...most cadets got into West Point without receiving an LOA. The goal is the appointment not an LOA.

Good luck!:thumb:

I actually just received a LOA today in the mail, but i must finish my file.(Did not do CFA yet) and get medically cleared. So I am assuming you can get one without the CFA.

Congratulations!!

You can get an LOA without the CFA. However, you will not get an Appointment unless you can pass the CFA. An Appointment gets you to R-Day, a LOA does not.

Thank you, I am extremely happy i got one. I am ecstatic. I am going to finish the rest of my file ASAP to get to R-day:shake:shake:
Goodluck to your son
