NAPS Appointment

My son received an appointment to NAPS today!! He is excited and will be signing the letter of intent asap. He will be flying out to spend the weekend with the wrestling team next Friday.

He had applied to USNA, Westpoint & USCGA. His first choice was Navy.
Should he call the other 2 academies to withdraw his application as well as calling the MOC to advise of the appointment?

If he has already signed his acceptance then yes, he should notify the other academies to withdraw his application.

That is a great and generous idea, but you may want to hold on for just a minute. A good first move is to let your BGO know, just in case. If you have an MOC interview scheduled, I think it would be great practice to accept it, regardless. I don't know if there are any stats on an early NAPS offers turning into an appointment, but it may have happened in the past.
I think it would be reasonable to withdraw applications to the other Academies and the nomination requests for the other Academies if you REALLY know your intentions. I just have been trained for too long to keep all options open. If your BGO says different, by all means take your hat out of the ring and withdraw the USNA Nomination. And if you withdraw early (or even not), a thankyou note for the MOC's would be in order (since you'll need one next year). You have plenty of time, and no harm if you delay a few weeks. Take some deep breaths. Smile a LOT! Congrats!

Would your son prefer to go directly to West Point (no prep school) instead of going to NAPS? I know you said USNA was his first choice. But what his choice between a USMA direct appointment and a NAPS appointment?

If he'd prefer to go to USMA over NAPS, he needs to keep his hat in the ring.

Even if he signs the "letter of intent" he can keep his applications open if he so wishes.
The Academies don't participate in the National Letter of Intent program so it is not binding.
If he is being recruited, I don't see a NAPS appointment changing to a USNA appointment (stranger things have happened though) but he certainly may receive other offers.

Still continue on with the process, MOC interview and so forth. There are LAST MINUTE changes that occur, some can even take place a few weeks and sometimes days out from I-DAY as there are folks who don't take their appointment and USNA has a waitlist that can include NAPS folks.
