Hi all,

I was recently looking through the Class of 2013 profile and came across the number of presidential qualified applicants that were accepted. It says that 73 sons and 24 daughters are in the class of 2013. Some of them may not have gotten a presidential appointment because they got a MOC nom. This may be a dumb question, but even if every single one of them got in on a presidential appointment (which is probably unlikely if they were competitive applicants), that 73+24 only adds up to 97. Now, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but that is 3 short of the 100 presidential appointments said to be given out. My questions is, are all 100 of those appointment from the presidential used up every year?

Thank you,

Brian

Very SIMPLE answer to a legitimate question. Unlike MOC nominations (Everyone in the COUNTRY is AUTHORIZED a MOC nomination); a Presidential nomination is only authorized to certain people. On average, there will be about 500 applicants who are authorized a presidential nomination. Of those 500 individuals; pretty much ALL OF THEM better be also applying for a congressional nomination. Now, fast forward through the process. It is possible to NOT give out the 100 presidential nominations. VERY UNLIKELY HOWEVER. Also; if a few people changed their mind; (YES, a lot of people decide to take that scholarship to USC, Harvard, Michigan State, Northwestern, etc... instead of the academy); that's a few available presidentials. But it's quite possible that of the 500 authorized a presidential, only about 200 were (Qualified candidates with the grades, physical, tests, etc...). Of those 200, 100 didn't originally get the presidential, but if they were good, they probably got their MOC nomination.

In a nut shell: Your appointment is not binding. If someone decides on June 25th; never mind... I quit. Or even during BCT. The academy is NOT going to replace that person. If a person turns down an appointment in april or may; the academy will usually try and find an alternate. Easier for MOC nominations than presidentials. But if they decide at the last minute to turn down the academy, the academy doesn't have time to find an alternate. hope this helps explain it. Mike....

You appear to be confused about the qualification to receive a Presidential Nominations. Not all sons and daughters of Academy grads are eligible, furthermore you don't have to be the child of a graduate to receive a Presidential Nomination.

there may be appointed each year at the Academy cadets as follows:
(1) one hundred selected by the President from the children of members of an armed force who— (A) are on active duty (other than for training) and who have served continuously on active duty for at least eight years;
(B) are, or who died while they were, retired with pay or granted retired or retainer pay;
(C) are serving as members of reserve components and are credited with at least eight years of service computed under section 12733 of this title; or
(D) would be, or who died while they would have been, entitled to retired pay under chapter 1223 of this title except for not having attained 60 years of age;

BSA is not confused, he is a dependent child of a military member. His point was that the 13 class has only 97 Presidentials, and wondering why it was not 100. At least that is how I took it. Unless, I missed something in his post he never mentioned that it was AFA grads that received Presidential, thus he is on target by asking why only 97 AFA cadets got Presidential when 100 are eligible.

FYI...BSA is a candidate that the AFA is his dream, he could probably beat, you, me, Flieger, TPG and all of the current cadets like Raimius, Hornet and Eagle on facts regarding the AFA stats!...BSA when you get an apptmt keep that fact hidden because if you let that compliment go to your cranium, it will make you a prime target at BCT!

I'm with Just_A_Mom on this one, bsa07eagle is confusing apples with oranges.

Nowhere on the USAFA Class of 2013 profile does it mention anything about those 97 cadets getting a presidential nomination.

Yes, there are 97 sons and daughters of Service Academy graduates in the USAFA Class of 2013.

No, not all of them (or even any of them, theoretically) received a presidential nomination, because being a son or daughter of a Service Academy grad does not entitle you to one.

Read the link Pima -
It clearly says - 73 sons and 24 daughters of service academy alumni.

Not all SA alumni children qualify for a Presidential Nomination. Furthermore, the link doesn't say they were presidential nominations.

Get it..got it! Thanks Luigi! The link showed that 97 were AFA LEGACY, not PRESIDENTIAL.

BSA did not provide a link, thus it appeared that he was asking why only 97 cadets were "charged" out of 100.

Kudos to JAM for investigating further to show that legacies and Presidential are not the same. That being said the breakdown also does not disclose the % for candidates that came in under Presidential.

Jam, we crossed post, the reality is Luigi provided the link, not BSA, thus my response was based on BSA's stats.....personally I feel no need to go and google every fact by every poster, I base my responses on trust that they are correct in facts. I only google if I think it is off the wall regarding stats.

That being said the fact that Luigi went to the lengths of searching and linking to this thread should be applauded.

I am sorry that I did not clarify the information. That information is just the children of SA grads right? It does not include all the children of ROTC, Enlisted, and OTS grads (that also may be Active Duty). I apologise for not showing my info. Thanks for the answers everyone, I think Christcorp was able to answer the question that I had (Thank you). I was just wanting to know if all 100 presidential appointment slots were completely filled each year.

Later,

Brian
