Hello Everyone-

First of all I'd just like to thank you for all of the useful information you've provided me with throughout my whole application process. Due in part to that help, I received a letter of assurance about a week ago.

Unfortunately, I also received a speeding ticket. I called USAFA and spoke with my admissions counselor who told me that after I attend traffic school I should write a "who/what/where/when/why" and send it to the admissions office at USAFA. I can do that, I'm just wondering what sort of effect it will have on my letter of assurance status.
Do any of you have experience regarding speeding tickets/reporting them to USAFA?
Are you aware of the consequences?
**Additional info: Speeding ticket cost (with traffic school): $266. I was going 62 in a 45 zone, I believe I was written up for going 60.**

Thank you,
Derek

$266; that's a lesson there, right? And did YOU pay it, or did your parents? I'll let you guess what might have occurred under similar circumstances in the fencers household.

If you write the letter and supply all the documention as to paid fine, traffic school, any insurance consequences... it should be ok. But as far as I know, the AFA won't look kindly on a second offense. (Your parents won't either)

Son had one similar and it did not affect his LOA or appointment. Just learn from it. Judge made him show the money came out of his account. If not, he had to pull weeds at city hall on Saturdays for community service. He took the hit out of his bank account. Took alot of nights working at $7.00/hour. to pay off that ticket.

oh, it's definitely a lesson :] believe me, I've had talks with lots of adults on this one...learned my lesson (leave my house earlier to get to school on time)

AND of course I am paying for it personally, no way would it be up to my mom to bail me out.

thanks for the help

it is not a felony so should it be an impact at all. Certainly someone one the AF officer ranks has gotten a speeding ticket (in a car)

The derek, I'll give you the same lecture I gave my young troops when they had similar situations to deal with.

We ALL make MISTAKES, some even as serious as going 15-20 mph over the speed limit. They are called "life lessons" for a reason; we expect you to LEARN from them, and not do this type of behavior again. I will accept and forgive those who make mistakes, everytime. Because we make them too.

What I would not accept, and would not forgive, is doing something CRIMINAL. You did the right thing and imediately fessed up to your error. The Academy will take the information, place a note in your file to remind themselves to see if this is the start of a trend, then forget about it (most likely, and especially if this ISN'T the start of a trend).

In the end, I guess our parents were right: honesty IS the best policy. (Our parents were right? I mean, who coulda thunk it, you know what I mean? I wonder what else they were right about? Perhaps I should eat that broccoli!)

Do what they say, drive safe from now on, and you'll be fine.

You'll be fine as long as you report it accurately and in full detail. The speeding ticket I got was worse than yours but I'm still here. Just don't hide anything. However, if you get a speeding ticket while attending here, thats a different story

just wondering...what would be the consequence for a ticket WHILE at the academy? probation?

Confinements

Cadets receiving parking or moving violation citations must report to their AOC or
AMT the next duty day. AOC/AMT will deal with traffic tickets on a case by case basis.

Maybe this should become a thread on sticky since every yr this occurs and it might help to have there to quickly calm the fears.
