LOA Expiration Date

A quick question... son's LOA for USMA expires on January 27. He has interview with MOC on Friday. He is reluctant to mention the need for the nomination prior to that date.... should he mention it? Can the LOA date be extended?

Thanks in advance,

proudmama

There is no need to mention it; the slates are due prior to that point. If he's on the slate, he will receive an appointment. My son brought a copy of his LOA to his interview and handed it to the academy liason to "update his file." They already knew about it, he was told. They want to nominate kids who will be appointed (bragging rights for MOCs). Give the process a chance to work. I know it's frustrating at times, but it's a good process.

thanks

Okay, I thought the MOC had until the end of January...

I know the office coordinator of his MOC has a copy of the LOA already, we were just concerned about the timelines.

I promise to breathe and relax now...

THANKS!

....the slates are due prior to that point.

Actually - the final date for the MOC to turn in the slate is 1/31 (which is a Sunday this year so presumably most MOCs may submit it by Friday the 29th). However, I don't think the date is going to be a problem. The MOC has a copy of the LOA (they are always notified by the SA, they may choose not to tell you that they have it or know about it, but they do have it). The MOC is going to submit their slate as they usually do. I would not suggest telling the MOC that you need a nom early. They know the system and they know you have an LOA. The SA knows that when the nom is issued is totally out of your control. If, however, there are items in your LOA aside from the nom, I suggest that you be sure that anything within your control is met before that date.

They are due the end of January but your son shouldn't worry. As long as he has his part done he is good. His MOC should know of his LOA and hence his need for an appointment. He can certainly mention it in the interview.
The LOA does not self destruct on Jan 27th. They just need to know he still wants the appointment so they can offer it to someone else if he chooses another school.

ProudMama, try not to keep on burnin'.....I would take a close read through the LOA one more time. The date in January probably is a date that all open items need to be closed out in his file, excluding the nomination. My son got an LOA in August, and had until October 15th to get everything completed. He is still going through the nomination process here in MD. It does not seem to make sense for USMA to issue the LOA that would "expire" in January, due to not getting a nomination.

I am going to second what PotentialParent just said. After reading your post yesterday I went back and read my son's LoA from USMA. His was from July and it said also that he had until October 15th to finish his application. It did not say that the nom had to be before then. Best of luck to your son!

I agree that the nom part of the LoA does not have an expiration date. I recieved mine 2 weeks ago after completing my file. My LoA says nothing about Jan 29th. If you get your part done, you will be set.
