I recently took a look over my current "resume" and noticed that while I am pretty well off in academics and athletics, I am severely lacking in leadership...here's my predicament:

First off, I am a Cadet Corporal in my school's MCJROTC program...I have no staff positions (or positions at all, really) in the program and my promotion prospects look poor at this point:frown:.

Secondly, as far as service clubs I am in (Beta and Math Honor Society), the leadership is elected mostly from seniors and the one officer position open to a sophomore (points secretary) was taken up before I even had a chance.

Thirdly, for the sports I am involved in I am okay at them but not superb and thus cannot be a team captain in them because those are reserved for better players.

Overall trends at my school is there are way too many people vying for leadership positions that have better creds than me, leadership is given mostly to seniors, and I am not particularly heavily involved in an activity.

Now some bright spots that am delving into...I am going to ask my coach to be a leader in the school's FCA club I am a member of (this may or may not fall through). Also, I am thinking about becoming a project chairperson in one the service clubs but can't think of a project. As for my JROTC and sports leadership, I am at a loss as to what to do.

Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated...

You can be a tutor, which is a sign of leadership. Also, try to look into activities within the community like a volunteer fire fighter. Perhaps there is a smaller club you can join and take charge? I joined a club (Leo Club) with only around 10 members and became president; just make sure you are a good leader regardless.

Keep an open mind and look into joining the Civil Air Patrol. Even though it's an Air Force style program, it will help you in so many ways if you put the effort into it. It will also help you to manage your time effectively, which you will definitely need to do at an academy. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me! I am very involved in the program, and I'd love to help you out.

Best of luck!!

Run for student government positions

Look into your local community and city events - you might find opportunities. Leadership positions aren't confined to school activities

Start something on your own for the community! You might need help from your city or adult friends to do this

Hey 2012Cadet!

As a sophomore, now is not the time to be worrying about a lack of leadership positions, imo. Like you've said before, many leadership positions are reserved for seniors. Keep up your commitment to Beta and the Math Honor Society, and leadership positions will open up. In addition to leadership in clubs and sports, there are all other kinds of activities you can participate in -- one example already noted is tutoring. Another "leadership" type thing you can also look into the summer before your senior year is Boys State.

Above all, don't do things just so you can "fill leadership positions," have fun!

Make the most of your MCJROTC experience. Don't worry about not having a leadership position yet - aren't you only a sophomore? You still have two more years.
Being a good follower helps to make one a good leader.

I keep recommending Boys State because it is a great leadership program and is worth lots of points with the Service Academies. It is for rising seniors in high school. If you are a sophomore, go ahead and check the website for your state to find out what you need to do to attend. I believe you are in Georgia so go to www.gaboysstate.com for information.

If you attend a religious organization, you can look there for leadership opportunities. My son was active in our church helping with Bible School for younger children and as a counselor for junior high mission trips and retreats.

Leadership isn't something people just get. You need to be a member of those organizations for a while first. As a sophomore you should focus more on following and seeing how the current leaders do their jobs to set yourself up for success. Don't start worrying about leadership until next year. JROTC is a ladder, you should be in a leadership position by sometime next year so don't worry just keep up the good work.

All you can do now is set yourself up for the future. Help out other members in clubs you are part of and get noticed. Help out as much as possible so when you decide to run for a leadership position people will be inclined to vote for you.
