I'd just like to let the forum know that I won my first wrestling match yesterday! Just had to tell someone!

Congratulations Nick- Wrestling is far and away the hardest sport I ever participated in (which I did briefly, badly and with much suffering!)- my hat is off to anyone who goes thru that discipline!:thumb:

Congrats...I tried wrestling my freshman year and sucked thoroughly at it so my hats off to you if you're good at it.

Thanks. I did it my freshman year and wasn't that great either due to the fact that I showed up halfway through the season and it showed for the rest of it, so, I didn't wrestle. I'm not that great at it either, but it's something I think I could be good at and something I kinda like to do, so I'll stick with it at least through the end of this season. What sports do you do?

Congratulations! First match ever or first match won?

I had a match last night myself. My team dominated, 66-12. Good times.

Anyone being recruited for wrestling? If accepted to the air force academy, I intend to try and walk on the team. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I'm planning on doing lacrosse and am going to conditioning practice 3 times a week, and I also plan on doing track again this year (not sure if should do long distance or sprint). This brings up a question of mine...would doing long distance help prepare me better for pre-1st year summer training since they do marches/runs for long distances too?. Anyways, back to sports I do, I also plan on doing orienteering next year again. But alas, am not currently competing in any current sports (since the only ones actually competing at this time are basketball and wrestling).

Nick: I thought that you would find this link interesting- VMI Wrestling just put up (this morning) this new interactive guide to their wrestling program.

Additionally if you are a wrestling fan on Saturday Feb 6 the 16th annual All-Academy Championships will be held at USNA this year (they were at VMI last year). As far as I can tell this is the only place that pretty much has all of the Service Academies and military colleges competing in an NCAA sporting event at the same time. Last year wrestling teams from the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, The Citadel, Norwich and VMI all particpated.

Good luck and keep on scrapping!

It's the 'sport' of moving around unfamiliar terrain with a map and compass without getting lost. I've done this a few times and personally think it's exciting to 'stay on course'. It takes a good sense of direction and observation while not tripping over rocks.

But it's not for everyone.

I would imagine a little bit, but I think they run on trails with packs and boots on. Running on a trail with hills and valleys alone is differnt than running on a track. So I think it might help you with the endurance part, but not with the actual running. But, I'm not sure so.....
