Md MOC's

Hi,
I interviewed yesterday (Friday Nov.13th) with Senator Milkuski's panel. I received a letter this week from Senator Cardin's office stating they had received my application and would contact me with an interview time if I am eligible. The application forms indicated Senator Cardin will hold interviews Dec. 5th.

I will interview with Congressman Hoyer Sat. Nov. 21st, and I was interviewed by phone last night by a panel member.

Hope this helps.

I had read through many of the threads regarding interviews. They were very helpful and I felt well prepared. A question I was asked that I hadn't anticipated was to name a few current news events and give my impressions. I spoke about three and they said "what else"? I was of course well prepared regarding the war, I spoke about health care reform, and the economy...then the "what else" made me hesitate. I hope I did ok.

Sen. Cardin has interviews after Sen. Mikulski has chosen her nominations. They coordinate so they do not name the same candidates to each of their respective panels.

If you get a nomination from Sen. Mikulski you can expect a letter from Ben Cardin telling you that you will not be interviewed, nor will you be considered anymore for his nomination due to a Sen. Mikulski nom.

Thanks that's very good to know. The panel told me yesterday that Senator Mikulski can give 20 nominations. Last year 171 of the candidates interviewing were seeking nominations to USNA. Since my interview with Congressman Hoyer is next Saturday I assume the Senators are not communicating with the Congressmen from each district.

No. We have not heard from Sarbanes yet. I don't even know when he holds interviews. Cardin at least has a date on his web site. Still waiting.

Son was at Senator Mikulski's office last Friday. Ten minute in and out, really a bit ridiculous, but I understand the numbers versus time constraints. Rep. Kratovil on Saturday, November 28. Received a letter from Senator Cardin saying they will be in touch. Seems like a logical way to maximize numbers, having the Senators work together. My son has an LOA to USMA, so we are hoping he makes it onto someone's list! Best of luck to all of those going through the process.

Son received a USMA nomination from Senator Mikulski. Letter received on Friday November 27. He has an LOA from USMA. Best of luck to all.

Son received a letter from Sen. Cardin saying he will be scheduled for interview in January.

They are holding 2 interview dates due to the number of applications -- Dec 5 and a date in January to be determined at a later time.

got the mukulski nom and interviewed with kratovil's board last saturday...since i got the mikulski nom cardin cancelled my interview =( so all the work on that application got flushed. but its all good, i got one! hopefully the mikulski nomination does not eliminate me from the running for the kratovil one too

It shouldn't. The MD US Senators communicate so as not to duplicate, but they don't coordinate with the Representatives. I know many candidates who have had their Cardin interview cancelled after they received a nom from Mikulski, but many of those Mikulski noms came in addition to the Representative nom as well.

My son got the same call from Cardin's office, cancelling his interview for this Saturday, since he got a USMA nomination from Senator Mikulski's office. He discussed with them that he was not yet decided as to USMA versus USAFA, but they stated that they would not interview, since he told them in his package that his number one choice was USMA. I understand the numbers issue, and that there are a lot of talented applicants, but still seems a little harsh to not even give the interview.

We are hoping for a USAFA nomination from Rep. Kratovil's office.

I work on Capitol Hill, and know how busy the MOC's staff are, and now after going through this process with my son, I strongly believe the whole thing should be in the hands of the academies. Give them some selection criteria and let them admit the right candidates.

I don't think thats true. The Senators do talk to the Congressman. I just got an email from Cardin saying that my interview is cancelled because Ruppersberger's office told Cardin that I was nominated to the Naval Academy by Ruppersberger. So I think some Congressman communicate with the Senators.

It's true in some cases but not all, as I know multiple candidates who have noms from their Rep and from Senator Mikulski.

Congrats on the nomination. :thumb:

Thanks Luigi...now i just got to wait for the academy's end

You will see this all over the board in the next few months. I know from history NY and TX senators also state if you have a MOC nom in hand we will not give you one, but later on you will see kids shocked that they got 2. It really comes down to the efficiency of the MOC's staff, if they go back and x-reference the candidate, then you could receive the letter/call that because you have one we will not be placing you into the pool.

Some MOCs that talk will still place a candidate on their list because they asked for a nom from all 3. Some will receive it because the MOC wants to spread the wealth, but in the end they are not going to place a name on the slate just for that theory. They all have their own personal parameters/direction in their method for nominating.

Also you must place the SA into the equation. For MD, USNA is typically very competitive compared to the USAFA. Thus, for USNA noms they may spread the wealth, but for the AFA, USCGA, and USMA they don't.

MD's MOC (Mikulski, Cardin, local (Sarbanes)) all make you rank your SA preference and will only interview you for your #1 choice. So, if you have an LOA to your #2 choice but they won't interview you for your #2 choice, how can you possibly get a nomination to your #2 choice?

MDmom2014 and PotentialParent - It is a double-edged sword applying to mulitple academies, multiple nominations.
When folks talk about getting an LOA and not a nomination this is the scenario I have heard of the most - getting a nom to the #1 school and and LOA (no nom) to the #2 school.
Hang in there - if your candidate made the good faith effort to secure a nomination and was not successful, the academy will know that.

Many MOC's will only allow a candidate to receive only one nomination regardless of how many academies they applied to.
