Are plebes for the Class of 2014 going to be issued the new blue and gray Navy Working Uniforms? I know that the region that USNA is in has already switched over to the uniform, including Norfolk, and the only regions that have yet to switch over are those in Europe, and the Pacific.

The Naval Academy, though located in the Naval District Washington area, is its own little uniform micro-climate, with unique Uniform Regs applicable only at USNA. I'm sure the issue will be discussed with all the higher powers, as to if and when.

Please no. They are a terrible idea. If they do switch the uniforms it should be to all khakis, but they shouldn't switch the uniforms. They should take away winter working blues and leave us in summer ones all year and we can wear our Ike's or reefers with it.

The short sleeve version (in the summer). Also SDBs/whites if you're on certain duties.

Also, the NWUs do look that bad.

What's the need?

In a time of financial crisis affecting the entire nation - why must there be any uniform changes? If it can be shown that some members of the military are in danger as a result of what they are caused to wear - well, by all means, change their uniforms to make them safer - otherwise, why spend the money on something as frivolous as a 'new look'?

Uniform changes are a fact of military life

One of the great, unchanging constants of military life is messing about with uniforms, across all services and the associated grumbling by those who must live through it. Sometimes, it works out great, sometimes, it's a few years of goshawfulness until a new Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) or head of service comes in. The standing joke is, that's one of the few things CNO can actually change during his tour with immediate effect.

As Marvin suggests, not something to put energy into. It's inevitable.

NAPSters are wearing the new work uniforms, so I am guessing (hoping) that USNA will switch with the class of 2014.

Also new uniforms are supposed to replace several different uniforms. there for saving money in the long run.

Which uniform are we talking about?

I thought that the blue and grey uniform was strictly an enlisted uniform?

Officers have gold lettering and enlisted have whiteish silver lettering on the "blue digi" looking uniform. I thought they looked pretty stupid the first time I saw them, but they've grown on me a bit. Still don't understand the concept of where a "cammo" uniform but having a shiny brass belt buckle.

I'm not a huge fan of the new E-1 through E-6 uniforms, and I don't think Marines or Navy Chiefs are either.

No, I don't care about any amount of money involved its irrelevant for the mids because it will just cycle through their bank account, but it would completely ruin the tradition. The uniforms have always been nice looking and fitted-ish. Always something you would see someone wearing to work (with some color modifications) and always professional. Now you're going to completely change the working environment to some baggy multi-colored uniform whose main purpose in development was to not show stains when working on machinery.
USNA is the most visited college campus in the country, its a national icon, and if they get the blue diggies it will be a sh*t show of tradition change. Imagine the pictures of mids walking down stribling in those blueberry diarrhea get-ups instead of working blues. Don't even try to tell me it looks better. We're "the face of the navy". If you want to change everything else to convenience the men fine, but the academy needs to show its best face all of the time.

Remember the 'Z' Grams of the seventies? ADM Zumalt and his "Fashion Sense" to make E-1's look the same as O-10's with the CPO Style Dress uniforms. Believe me, there is no room on a sub for 128 hanging dress uniforms and frame covers! At the end of a patrol we all looked like street people! He changed the enlisted work uniform from dungarees to jumpers and straight leg poly cotton pants (called utilities). In a fire they would melt! As an engineer, the jumper would always get caught on valves, brackets, railings and get ripped to shreds. He also got rid of the fleet favorite for officers, the dress kakai uniform.

I always loved the dress whites and blues with the dixie cap. No one would mistake you for anything other than a sailor wearing those. We did have a fondness for the winter working, black on black but that was it for Zummies fashion creations.

Yes. The Marines are very sensitive about the E-1/6 working uniform for obvious reasons. It looks like a wannabe Marine Service Charlie uniform. The NWU is going to have the same effect the jumper and pants had in the seventies. It isn't practical for day to day watchstanding in the fleet. The espoused reason for the Marpat-like blue and gray is to cover paint and dirt stains. Yeah. I want to meet the senior first or Chief that thinks that a stained and soiled uniform at a unit inspection is Sat!

If ADM Mullen is reading this blast, please keep the history and traditions in mind when you all want to tinker with any naval uniform! And PLEASE, get rid of the P-ss Covers for squids! We are called White Hats for a reason!

END OF RANT

I assume dungarees only live on in the memories of old salts?

Midshipmen 2013,
I agree with you on the uniform issue. I think they are ugly and so does son. And the new PT uniform is worse.
But the higher ups have decided to make a change like it or not.
The only reason I "hope" USNA adopts them next year is purely financial. Because any money he saves is money Dad saves. I know his pay does not go far and every little bit helps.

he'll be paid whatever he owes on the uniform to pay it right back to the government. Everything he needs will be provided for.
