The PMS from my #1 choice stated that the board was December 4th. Does anyone know when these results will be sent out?

Plenty of speculation, but no hard facts. The popular opinion (FWIW) is guessing "by the end of next week" for a short answer. Read some of these other threads here for the more complicated reasoning behind this guess.

No guarantees by any means. I'd check the site daily. Can't hurt.

At our house we're really hoping Santa brings the results early.

The Dec board results will not likely not be released until January. Typically it takes 4-6 weeks for the notification. The October board just sent out notifications the last few weeks, so you can see it still is a waiting period in that time frame.

I will respectfully bet against that scenario. Yes, the first board results took longer than planned to get sent out (per another post with some contact within the system), but they were planning to improve that turnaround.

Also, if it does indeed take until January to get these letters out, the January board will not be able to be held (there will be a lot of loose extra scholarship slot offers out there that cannot be re-used).

With this pace, boards could only be held every other month, which would not allow enough iterations (October, December, Februray, April) to get everyone through the process, as they have to use 3 to 4 times as many scholarship slots for the number of accepted awards in a round (based upon an average school selection of between 3 and 4 per recipient).

Finally, this is the system they implemented last year and they were able to turn boards around last year in quicker fashion. I'm betting they get the situation fixed with this round.

The list is determined when the board meets, it is just that the results take time to coordinate and release. It is the same way for officer promotions, the board meets for a 3 day time frame, however, the results are not announced for @ 6 weeks. Meanwhile a lower ranking board will continue to meet. The way the promotion system works is mandated. There must be a certain percentage of Flag to Field to Company. You can't promote a captain to major if the majors aren't promoted to Lt Col or retire. This is why it can take months to actually pin on to the next rank, exception is 1st lt and capt.

Two yrs ago when DS went up for a scholarship, they had the same lag time, it did not stop them from also having the monthly boards. The same would be true for the SA's the boards meet weekly, the results are released quickly, however, they are not waiting for the acceptances from the previous board to offer an apptmt at the next board. I can't recall, but I believe that candidates have until May to accept or decline, thus, if a candidate meets the Oct board and is offered a scholarship, but meanwhile uses this as plan B, they will not be accepting or declining until they know if they got into an SA, which might not happen until mid-late March. Again, under your theory the boards really should not review any candidates that are applying for ROTC and an SA until the SA announces their apptmts, because the boards would be held up not knowing if that candidate is going to accept an appt or a scholarship.

Finally boards are set dates because it is a committee that does it, the officers reviewing the applications have other jobs besides sitting on a board. For this reason, they need to keep it moving because if they have to move around dates then there maybe problems with date conflictions for committee members.

I've been wondering about that. Reports that the board "only" determines OML had me . I've been thinking that the OML was based on a finite, quantitative score that was determined by CC PRIOR to the meeting and with very little subjective discussion. Accordingly I presumed that the board's time was mainly spent in qualitative and subjective discussion of who gets what, and where.

It's my understanding that AROTC applicants must accept or decline the scholarship within 30 days of receiving notice. By that deadline the student must identify the college where s/he will enroll. That's where it gets tricky because a kid may pick a school in January that ultimately rejects him/her in March. I believe this leads to a fair degree of "scholarship shuffle" in April.

I think it probably does matter on board results more for other branches than the AF because for the AFROTC you do not select schools, you can take it anywhere you want to, however the type may have to be converted if the school is OOS and does not give the ROTC student the IS rate.

I have always wondered why the Army and the Navy both require the school selection when they know that college admission results at the earliest will not come out until Mid-Dec. and in many cases results do not come out until Feb/Mar. It seems that there might be alot of double work being done with this process. Might b wrong, but that how it appears to me.

I heard that in the past, after some board meetings, the results were available to the candidates as quickly as 2 weeks or earlier.

Pima,

Once again I will respectfully disagree with your estimate.

First, your son went through the process 2 year ago when the practice was different. Last year the process changed from what has been posted and last year's timing was 2 weeks from board date to letter in the mail on the first 2 boards.

In post #2 on this thread we see the dates for the first board last year:

http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=3657

And at the bottom of this page we see the same results for the 2nd (in this case November) board last year:

http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=3913&page=2

The people at units I've talked to said the delay in the October board was an anomaly and should be fixed going forward. We are hoping that the fix is in time for this board.

This may be a matter of comparing apples to oranges. I believe Pima's son went through the AFROTC process two years ago, and Goaliedad's daughter is going through a brand new AROTC system this year. Two different processes.

In fairness, I'm not sure how many bugs still remain in the AROTC's new centralized scholarship process or whether they are fine tuning it as they go. As a father of a daughter that is applying to both, it definitely seems different.

I Spoke to My son's PMS from his 1st choice on Dec 4th and he stated that his package should have went to the board that day. He told me all you can do is keep your fingers crossed now. I have not heard anything else since then. Waiting patiently, (He was accepted to his 1st choice back on November 4th)

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I don't think any of us are...

I know that I am not !!! The waiting is the hardest part!

I'm going to throw out a thought about why these early boards are taking such a long time. It is purely speculation on my part and let's see if it makes any sense to any of you out there...

We all have heard that various battallions are experiencing severe restrictions on the number of 4-year scholarships available to them as well as the inability to offer campus scholarships. For a unit trying to maintain its current size (or reasonably close) going forward, this poses quite a challenge.

We all also know that there are a large number of SA applicants who also apply AROTC either as a backup or because they don't have their college admissions decisions yet to make the choice. From the statistics I've seen however, most ROTC applicants who are admitted to a SA choose the SA. And when they choose the SA, they usually hold their ROTC scholarship until they take off the bubble wrap or at least May 1.

This leaves units that have a significant number of SA applicants as ROTC scholarship recipients in a place where they receive a bunch of scholarships back after all the "best" applicants have committed to other schools.

In years past, when they had campus scholarships to give out, the ROO's at these schools knew they could recruit locally to fill their units, so losing a few to West Point wasn't an issue. Perhaps with the freeze on on-campus scholarships, this dynamic has changed?

IIRC, the ROTC application does ask if you are applying to a SA, so the units do know who they might be losing to a SA appointment.

So when CC comes asking a PMS which of your fine candidates you wish to select, knowing that you need to make your unit work with only 4-year scholarships, do you take the applicants who checked that box? Do you ask CC for an advisement as to whether they have a Nom/LOA/Appointment? And if they do have one of those, will CC give you a replacement scholarship now in the very likely event that they lose this SA candidate?

I cannot imagine CC saying no to the extra scholarship because they don't want top candidates denied the ROTC option because a battallion is concerned about unit strength. I also imagine this puts the onus on CC to confirm/deny the status of the various SA applicants, so they can award these "compensatory scholarships" to the units. This would definitely gum up the works while these LOAs/Noms are getting sorted out.

This would also be consistent with one report in one of these threads where the PMS reported having 4 scholarships, but maybe 2 more. Perhaps these are the "compensatory picks"?

I'll throw this out to the rest of you to see if you have any experiences that would support or refute this potential situation...

I'm also going crazy. Son did not get into 1st choice school...but have other great choices and leaves open possibility of USNA.

Has anyone else been receiving phone calls from rotc battalions on the college list?

Son has been in contact with 2 on the list, so they know he has applied and interested, but in the last week, two other schools on the list called to see if his application was done and if he had any questions? hmmmmmm.

Goaliedad: How does your theory work with the "lower" tiered colleges that almost no SA applicant would consider? Seems to me if you were correct then we would be hearing about SOME people (those applying to the less attractive battalions) getting AROTC scholarships while the more competitive battalions were playing this "Gee I don't know and don't want to guess wrong so let me check back AGAIN with CC and ask for some more information".

My personal opinion is that AROTC CC cannot find their collective butts with both hands. This is just an example of both the local battalions and CC being unable to decide how they want to handle the fewer available scholarships and engaged in the process of CYOA....so that selecting incorrectly doesn't reflect badly on them. Of course this is just MY opinion.....

With regards to the "lower" tiered schools, IIRC AROTC releases their scholarship awards all at one time for a board, so the "lower" tiered school applicants have to wait in line with everyone else. From the first board, everyone seemed to say that their letters were dated November 7 IIRC.

And yes, I could be entirely wrong here, trying to attribute to an organized activity something that could be simply explained as chaos.

No phone calls here, only a quick exchange of emails with units in the last week of November.

I did find out that one unit could not see the results of the taping that was supposed to be included in her interview notes. This would imply that there may be issues in units being able to see various candidates files.

Did you ever get any communication from CC saying his file was complete?

We did not ourselves. Our last official letter said we still needed the PFT. So when it was sent in, I emailed CC and received a response that they did in fact have the PFT document, but that since the computer was down at that time, it hadn't been entered. You are making me wonder if they actually put it in the computer.

I'd be worried if those calls from the other units asking the status of his applications were since late November. Very worried.:redface: Perhaps it is that they hadn't been contacted yet by CC to ask if they were accepting him, perhaps CC hasn't even considered your son's application complete?

Perhaps this is a better evidence as to why things are taking this long at CC?

I hope his #2 school likes him. Remember it really only takes one school to make things work. Everything else is gravy.
