Questions about applying:

Before anyone says anything, I HAVE read the application process, but I still have some questions:

As for the nomination, my congressman says his deadline is November 20, which, clearly has passed, so now what? If I apply, say January 1, technically I have not missed his deadline, so would I be qualified for admittance summer of 2010? And how are we notified if we recieve a nomination?

I have other questions as well, if anyone is willing to help me out!

Hi undecided! It sounds like it is time for you to get on the phone. Our daughter, having listened to another applicant who had been accepted the year before, was under the impression that the nomination wasn't a big deal. So she put off checking the MOC's requirements and managed to miss the deadlines. She got on the phone to the MOC's SA coordinators and ate humble pie. One Senator's office told her flat out that they would have nothing to do with her any more, the deadline was past. The other Senator's staff member gave her a gentle, but thorough scolding and then said they had a nomination available and to fax in her application ASAP. The Congresswoman's staff member bent over backwards to be helpful and requested that DD send in everything by Christmas. Long story short, DD was EXTREMELY lucky and got a nom from the 2nd Senator. If you happen to be in a state where USMMA noms may go empty and the MOC staff still have the energy and willingness to be flexible, it is possible. That said, it is very stressful and definitely NOT something I'd recommend for anyone. DD added a few gray hairs to my head that December!

Part 2 is call USMMA admissions. Have you started your application at all? Get moving on it as soon as possible. Be sure to visit as part of your decision-making process. Good luck!

Even if your congressman's deadline has past your two senators might still be in play. When applying to a service academy it is important to consider every nominating source.

KPMarineopsdad: I looked it up, and I HAVE missed the deadlines for all of them, what would you recommend I do now?

I think you need to do as KPMum's daughter did and start calling, with humility and sincerity.

The fact that you have not yet applied to Kings Point, I'd think, would be a bad fact.

I also believe that any Congressman from your home state has the legal authority to nominate anyone (up to 10 people) from that state to KP.

TITLE 46 > Subtitle V > Part B > CHAPTER 513—UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY

§ 51302

(b) Nominators.— Nominations for competitive appointments for the positions allocated under subsection (c) may be made as follows:

(1) A Senator may nominate residents of the State represented by that Senator.

(2) A Member of the House of Representatives may nominate residents of the State in which the congressional district represented by that Member is located.

Thanks everyone, I agree with KPMum2012, it's time to eat humble pie, lol. I plan on calling my senator's and representatives... well... now! And tucker92, I sent you a pm.

So I called my senators and representative, they were very nice about it, but informed me that I could not send in my nominations late. So I am going along with what my parents think I should do, which is just attend community college, and apply next year. I know that the credits don't roll over, but they feel better with me taking some classes. The only problem I have with that is that I know for the application I need teacher recommendations, and a counselor recommendation, do I still do that if I have already graduated? Do I just get it from my COLLEGE teachers/counselors? If I need it from my highschool teachers/counselor, how do I go about getting it if I've already graduated?

I'm sorry it didn't work out. It helped my daughter that our state of residency is very small. The fact that the MOC staff members had not been overwhelmed by a huge volume of nomination applications may have made them more willing to work with DD.

Your next step is to call USMMA admissions - sooner rather than later. Explain your situation to them and ask them your questions. They are the best qualified to tell you what courses to take and how to handle recommendations. That way you know the information you get will be accurate.:thumb:

Best of luck in your continued quest for an eventual appointment to KP!

Holy cow, you are correct! USMMA admissions thinks that my daughter ought get a nomination from our congressmen, based on their familiarity with him, but I never read closely enough to realize other Congressional avenues to nomination are available.

nomination problem

i would certainly contact KP's admission office asap because if you express that you are applying and all of your nominationg sources due dates are passed, they maybe able to do something for you. My application was just reviewed and I should be finding out within a week. My Admissions Rep. said since I had been completed early tey would be albe to find a nomination from a state that nobody applies to the academy from(i.e.Wisconsin, Wymoing, Dakotas). It would be woth a phone call if this is your dream

Good Luck!!

Thanks, I think I will do that! I have emailed a KP rep in my area, and hope he will respond to me soon, but I think I will email/call KP as well. KPMum, thank you as well, your advice is really good. Db, hopefully I will be able to do that as well. BTW, I sent you a pm.

I will express something that I hinted at previously. Given that you will be calling (call, yes, don't wait for e-mail) Kings Point to ask them for a favor regarding a nomination, after your congressmen's dealines all passed, and you have not yet finished the application (have you approached the people who need to provide your recommendation letters?), you may want to anticipate how to answer if your commitment to really, really want to attend KP, at this point, is questioned. Asking KP to pull strings for a nomination and then finishing your application seems backwards.

You're right tucker92, I've already started the application, and have already approached the people I need to for recommendations, so I will take your advice and call them tomorrow after school. Thank you.

That is illegal, they cannot (nor will they) do that. All competitive appointment nominations for the USMMA must come from a Member Of Congress of the home state of the candidate.

Sorry Luigi, I most likely misinterpreted my admissions rep. She had mentioned something along the lines of from another state, but I guess she was also implying that from(i live in NY) she meant upstate NY or even a local district.

So I talked to the rep nearby and he gave me the number for a CDR, Admissions Rep for the Southeast, so hopefully, he'll be able to help me if he calls me back. I'll probably end up calling him again anyway though I don't want to be TOO pushy.

UNDECIDED. If you don't get a call PM me. I am an admissions rep for Virginia, MD, WVA, Wash DC. I'll hook ya up!
