Test Scores for SLS?

Hi, I am a Junior. I recently took the November SATs and PSATs. My SAT was 570 CR, 580 M, and 560 W. My PSAT was 650 CR, 610 M, and 480 W. I know these could be higher, but would USMA mix and match SAT and PSAT? I am also planning to take the ACT and SAT again.

Also, what is admissions' opinion on leadership seminars, such as Congressional Youth Leadership Committee, People to People, National Society of Highschool Scholars? I received many notifications from these, but I turned them down to their price, and I believe they are not that selective.

I'm not sure about the test scores but as to the High School scholarship thing for money, it's a waste of time (IMVHO) and not used by any school that I know. It's the National Honor Society that counts.

I would bet against USMA mixing and matching PSAT and SAT. They do mix same tests from different dates (SAT from October, then SAT in March), but they would not mix and match different tests (PSAT in November, SAT in March). They simply would look at whichever one (High ACT, High SAT, and only for SLS, high PSAT) makes you most competitive.

You are right. The ones that cost money are see-through. They could be fun for you and you might learn some things, but in terms of your admissions file... it probably won't help or hurt you. National Honor Society is great.

For SLS, finish your app the day it comes out. It takes 15 minutes. It fills up very fast on a rolling admission basis.

If I use my currents scores for the application, would I have time to update it?

I agree, don't go to those expensive "great experience" seminars. They are a waste.

I got 580CR, 570M, and 560W on first SAT in November. I got 650CR, 610M, and 480W on this year's PSAT.
For SLS should I just apply with the PSAT or is the writing too low?
I will send Jan and maybe March SAT too, along with maybe ACT.

I would give them all the scores you have, I'm pretty sure the admissions office looks at test scores in the way that they make you look best and that your higher SAT writing would help offset the lower PSAT score. May be wrong, but just my$.02

Since SLS apps close April 1 would I be able to submit March SATs?
It's cutting it close, but there is no Jan SAT site within my county.

I just would like another opinon on sending both scores for SLS. I am about to submit the sls application, and would I be able to update my application with a new gpa and new act/sat later this year before it closes?

I've got a quick question regarding my SS#. For the AF SS, I entered it as it appeared on my SS card: ###-##-####. For the USMA SLS, it says to just do #########. Is it bad that I used the dashes in the AF one?

I don't think you should worry too much about that, and I used the dashes too, if that helps .

Alright, good.

That remarks box on the bottom of the aplication is making me giddy. Do you not have to submit a resume to USMA SLS?

Yeah, I looked at my son's actual application and AF's still shows it with the dashes.

Alright, this all makes me feel much better.
The SLS Questionaire did not ask for GPA, even though they specified that you should have it handy on the front page?

Does it still have the space for comments? We made sure last year with my son's application for SLS that he filled up all the available space - better to tell them too much than too little. If your GPA is good, I'd certainly include it in comments. I haven't looked at this year's application yet to see how it works out, but would just recommend telling them as much as you can! (My son applied the first day it was open and got his acceptance letter dated the following day a few days later!).

Good to know that I wasn't the only one! I felt like the application was kind of standerized and didn't really allow me to show all my extracurriculars that mean a lot to me.

Now I'm just waiting on the email they said they would send me.

He felt the same way. Air Force's (which he applied for first) allowed you to include a resume of everything you wanted to say. Army and Navy's were both very standardized - Varsity Sport yes/no, Community Service yes/no. So he used the extra comment box (something like 2000 characters?) to expand on those things (like "150 hours community service" or things like that). I really got the impression (just as a parent) that those two were looking primarily at class rank, test scores and location. AF seemed to be looking more at the "whole person" and I know a lot of people even had to have interviews with their ALO's and things like that. This is just for SS, not the whole admissions process, but Army and Navy seemed more "automated". Check the right boxes and get in!

Oh, and be sure to check your junk mail. I don't remember WP's but I know with Navy my son found nearly everything from them went into his junk folder automatically. Seems like a lot of schools have trouble with that too during the admissions process.

Yea, the Air Force one allowed me to input my entire resume, but the West POint one only had room for 255 characters. I saw this as a deterrent to put in too much additional information, so I just put my AP and SAT II scores in there. Now I realize I should have put by GPA and some of my extracurriculars. Are you able to update it when you get your user ID?

At my school we all use a single program to read our email. All the spam email is sent to a large folder that the students do not have access to. I just emailed out tech guys asking if the @usma.edu address may be blocked for some reason. I'm hoping its just a delay in the USMA system and I will receive my email in the coming hours.

I would guess that it went into the spam folder because I got an email from them with my candidate ID in a matter of seconds, not hours. I hope you're able to get it all figured out soon!

So is it recommended filling in the remarks box with additional information like extra curriculars and positions? also, does anyone know what an average set of sat and psat test score are that they find acceptable? thanks.
