Hi,

sorry i have not been as active lately been really busy... things are looking good for the service academies from my understanding i recieved a recent nomination.... what are all the different types of nominations...

i know of competetive, principal competitive, and principal with alternates..... are there any more?

I hope that that Harv does not mind if I expand his/her question.......when you reply to Harv, can you also provide a breif description of the various nomination types, and how they differ from one another.......this type of reply would be educational to many.........many thanks!!!!!

Competetive: Each academy rates you on their own order of merit list... so the closest you are to number one the better... so of the 10 people nominated for the 1 slot... the highest on the order of merit recieves the position

Principal Competetive: A primary applicant is chosen as the "principal nominee" so as long as he is medically, scholastically, and physically qualified that individual recieves the appointment. No matter how high on the order of merit list at each individual academy he/she is compared to the other 9 nominees. If the principal chose to decline then the order of merit list is used for the remaining 9 nominees and bam bam bam down the list.

Principal with alternates: Same as Princial Competetive except the remaining nine can be numbered as well 1-10 if you have it.

Thats all I really know as of now

Lets say there are two spots the MOC wants to fill, so the MOC can nominate two slates of ten cadidates. How do they decide which slate you go on? I mean, lets say the MOC uses the principal competitive method and on both slates of ten, they nominate the top two of each slate as the prinicipal nom.

Is it pretty random which slate you go into, or do they fill up slates as nominations are given out.. like the first ten who applied and qualified go on to the first slate and the next ten go on the next?

Or is there really no set way to determine which slate you go on and it's all up to the MOC?

I'm only asking, because I was wondering what if you didn't have the highest WCS on the slate you're on, but if you would have been put on the other slate, you would have been the candidate with the highest WCS on THAT slate.

The candidate has no input into which slate they are put on. The MOC office has complete control of what names would go on what slate and the candidates will never know what slate they are on (or even if there is more than one slate).

Oh wow, well that was kind of the answer I was expecting. Thanks a lot ma'am!

Are you allowed to ask how they submit their slate and how many slates there are and such? I mean, you can ask, but are they allowed to tell you?

All the above are correct. Most MOCs have one slate per year. Every so often, they'll have 2 slates in a year. It's very rare (for various reasons) for an MOC to have and use more than 2 slates per year -- basically, it will leave the MOC with a year with zero noms and that's a bad thing.

Some MOCs will tell you how they nominate -- others may not. They are totally free to change their approach year to year. So, the fact that an MOC named a principal nom last year doesn't mean he/she has to do it the same way this year. And, if they have two slates, they can do things differently for each.

One thing to clarify from this string of posts. And maybe I am reading it wrong. Your WCS (Whole Candidate Score) is assigned by the Admissions Board at the SA. Your MOC application for nomination is entirely different. They do not have your WCS in front of them when deciding to rank their slate, choose a principal nominee, or which slate to place a candidate on if they happen to have two slates. Your MOC and/or their committee are deciding their slates depending upon your app and /or interview.

A better way to describe the nom types might use the following terminology:

1. principal with unranked slate (top dog gets appt if qualified, others unranked, academy decides.

2. principal with ranked slate (MOC ranks top to bottom)

3. Unranked slate of names (I believe this was called competitive earlier) It is my understanding most MOC's submit an unranked slate of names and the SA decides who they want.

When we call the unranked slate "competitive," some folks seem to get the idea that MOC has access to SA's scoring system or that the slate is actually ranked by the MOC........

Another note, once SA looks at unranked slates and chooses an appointee, the other nine go into that national pool to compete for appointment among all others in the pool.

Yes, it is perfectly acceptable to ask MOC what type of slate they submit.

Another note to understanding this process. This has been touched on before, you might consider reading old threads.

Anyway, say you have your app complete, are 3-Q'd, have a nomination (unranked slate for this example).........SA may not be able to decide who they want off that MOC's slate because they will wait until all candidates from that slate have complete applications (that deadline is something like Mar 1) and/or until they have received resolution on a candidate that was awaiting a medical waiver........

So, you may have some waiting to do. And it is totally not in your control.

If a candidate has a LOA......the only thing that a LOA candidate has to worry about is getting just ONE nom.........regardless of the non type and where it comes from......and should a LOA candidate get any kind of nom from anywhere......they will get an appointment assuming everything else in the LOA is satisfactorily completed (medical, etc)

Is all this correct?
