Is there any way to find out how many applicants to the Naval Academy there are from my district in Texas or even the entire state. I only ask to try and figure out how competitive I am with others applying in Texas. Even if anyone could give an average number from Texas or anything like that it would help. Thanks again.

You could try calling your state office. They might not be able to tell you that info but I don't see why they couldn't. I'm sure there is a good amount though, because Texas is a large state and probably a lot of people want to go to the Academy.
Good luck

Candidly, you are better advised to focus your attention on making yourself as competitive as you can rather than worrying about how many candidates you have from your district, etc. But, you might get the insight you want by contacting your nomination sources to ascertain how many candidates are on the slate to which you have been assigned - they are your immediate challengers.

Thanks for your help. Is one type of nomination more competitive when being selected for appointment than another. For example, I have been nominated by my district representative, Mac Thornberry, but would candidates who received a nomination from one of the senators, John Cornyn or Kay Bailey Hutchison, be more likely to be admitted than me? (Not considering VP or Presidential nominations)

The short answer is no. The longer answer is, it depends. Seriously, the answer is extremely complicated and out of your control.

I can't answer your question but I think this might be a good time to make a comment about how the geographic diversity requirements can either help or hurt you.

Obviously, it is much more difficult to get a nomination and appointment from San Diego, California than it is from Cody, Wyoming.

Recently, at the Academy, there was a mini-rebellion with regards to the Academy's #1 objective of diversity during a time of war. The Commandant was lambasted from a few members of the Brigade in the wake of the World Series color guard "scandal."

I will sanitize this story a bit to protect those involved.

After the Commandant's Call (or Dant's Call as the mids call it) two midshipmen got into a debate on this topic. One of them supported the Academy's emphasis on diversity while the other objected to it. The midshipman who supported the Academy's effort said, "Well, you're from Nebraska. My guess is that you had very little competition in obtaining both a nomination and appointment. What - did you graduate #1 in a graduating class of 27? Your only activity was probably president of the 4H Club. You had the advantage of geography over many other, probably more qualified, candidates who were never admitted. Should they say they were discriminated against? Do you feel like you were the unfair benefactor of some arbitrary effort in obtaining diversity? What if the 1200 brightest candidates all came from Maine? How is racial diversity any different than geographic diversity?"

In Wisconsin the Senator reps told us the number when asked (115). Our Congressman had only 11 which is sad. Compare that with my son's freind in CO Springs who had 400+ for his Congressman! Best of luck!

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison- TX - received a total of 653 applications for academy nominations.....

But that's for ALL academies - Military, Naval, Air Force, & Merchant Marine - right? Almost as important is the number of vacancies that particular MOC has, also. It fluctuates from year to year.

For instance, for the Class of 2013, each of our senators and our congressman each had only one vacancy for the Naval Academy. At least, that's what the service academy coordinators told me.

SIDENOTE: When dealing with academy coordinators - be very polite. Make their job easy. Do not dismiss them as a "secretary." You would be surprised how influential those "secretaries" are in determining the final nominations. Seriously, how much time do you think the MOC's spend on this? Maybe I'm just being cynical - but my guess is that they have a staff who makes these determinations. This is especially true for districts with many candidates.

Wow... I didn't think it would be that many. I have already been nominated by my Congressman, but I was just hoping for another nomination because I heard it might help me out.
