Hi all,

I just received a 4-year type 2 AFROTC scholarship. Not quite the type 1 that I wanted, but it will more than cover all the expenses of all the schools that I have applied to. I am glad that my plan B is coming together smoothly. Thanks everyone for your support and all the information you have all provided.

Brian

Congrats bsa07eagle on your AFROTC scholarship. Let me guess, you've also applied to the AFA? :thumb:

Yes sir,

I am ecstatic about the scholarship and am very thankful that I got it, but I am still waiting for a decision from the Academy. I would eagerly pick AFA over ROTC.

Hi all,

I should probably post this in the DODMERB forum, but I thought I would ask you guys first. In my scholarship it has a list of "critical actions to accept and activate the AFROTC scholarship next fall." Under this list it has: "Submitting your Letter of Admission and Statement of Intent; and (2) Completing your DoDMERB medical examination." Because I am also applying to the academy, I have completed the physical months ago (the end of June). Did you guys have to do anything for them to get the results of your physical? I can't understand why they are asking me to get a physical, when I thought they could use the same one for all sources (ROTC, SA's).

Thanks,

Brian

They do use the one physical to qualify you. Unfortunately the data processing of each individual program (3 branches of ROTC, SA's, etc.) do not query the DoDMERB results as a part of the initial qualification looking for the results from other paths into the system.

Go start a thread over in DoDMERB explaining your situation. Leave him and email (his address is all over in that forum) with your name and last 4 of SSN and the text from the post (he cannot work in SA Forums during the day, but can work on email). He will coordinate the information from your physical getting to all of the necessary entities in the other branches/academies, etc.

more than likely, no action on your part will be needed. The same thing happened to my older son with Academy physical being completed and then ROTC scholarship coming through.

ROTC will send your name and info up to DODMERB. Once they get it they review your file for the ROTC program. Each program and Academy have certain criteria and must be reviewed individually. It will take time, mainly to get your file to the top of the list to be reviewed. Once it's been reviewed your status will be updated. I wouldn't worry too much. It took my son a month or two to get the qualified status on his ROTC scholarship.

It'll happen! Since we are able to see our statuses so quickle online, it makes it seem like everyone else is too slow. This entire process is HURRY UP AND WAIT but it all works out.

Hi all,

I have yet another question about ROTC scholarships. What kind of commitment do you incur when you accept the scholarship (not as an officer). For example; I don't get an appointment to the AFA this year (which is my plan A), I take the ROTC scholarship and apply again to AFA the next year. Is it possible to terminate the scholarship after a year to accept an appointment to the AFA (if I get an appointment in the second round)? I have heard that once you accept a 4-year scholarship, you have to commit for all 4-years. I have heard of many people apply twice to the AFA, how do they do it if they have already accepted a 4-year ROTC scholarship?

Thanks all,

Brian

My daughter recently attended a Midshipmen's forum where one of the mids had attended Tulane on an NROTC scholarship for two years before beginning at USNA. He had additional service requirement based on the extra two years of scholarship. We interpreted that to mean something like 7 years commitment instead of 5.

You should ask your college's ROTC advisor for more info.

I have heard that once you accept a 4-year scholarship, you have to commit for all 4-years.
I'll second jbowman55's suggestion to check with your AFROTC adviser.
That said, you are under contract when you accept a ROTC 4 year scholarship. However you are able to "walk away" after the first year if you decide it is not right for you. My opinion is that as long as you do not start your second year of college (and enter the AFA instead), you can cancel your AFROTC contract and not owe any more than what your commitment is for the AFA. However, once you take your first day classes of your sophomore year under AFROTC, then you will have incurred (as in the NROTC example) additional service commitments if you go to the AFA.

Thanks everyone for your help. The other day I got a letter from DODMERB saying that AFROTC had gotten my physical results. I am still trying to get in contact with my detachment. Thank you everyone for helping me with all of my questions.

Brian

That's great! You are all set.

My son has had a difficult time getting ahold of one of his batallions with AROTC...but I'm sure the holiday break is the culprit. He was able to get an email up to 2 AFROTC detachments before they left for break and they answered most all of his questions. What wasn't answered they said to wait a week or two for the answer...probably because of the holiday break at school.

You'll have better luck once school starts.
