How do you apply for a JROTC nomination to the Air Force Academy? We have found forms specifically for USNA and USMA but not for USAFA.
My daughter asked her AFJROTC commander for a nomination. He seemed unsure of the process and wrote a letter of recommendation for a JROTC nomination and faxed it to USAFA admissions. We called her admissions counselor yesterday and were simply told that her commander should know the process and would not offer further information. We just don't want to any deadlines or an opportunity for a nomination.

JROTC

Mark, I do not know about the AF, but can say as you mentioned, USMA and USNA had the printable forms, and you simply have the JROTC Senior Officer Instructor fill them out, and attach the supporting documentation. I use this loosely because we applied for the JROTC nomination(airforce) , but used it for USMA and USNA. The exception is for the cross service approval it had to be an AFJROTC honor unit with merit/distinction.
Now, here comes the part where I will get beat on. My child applied to all the service academies and found the Regional directors, BG/Laison officers exceptionally helpful, and would get back to us in a matter of days with answers. Always answered emails and phone calls. Sometimes it took a few days for they are inidated now, but very helpful.
Our regional rep for USAF was terrible, never returned nine phone calls or any for that fact, or even returned 12 emails with a desperate plea for an answer on an application error. Eventually we contacted the proper individual up the food change and received an apology.
And, NO, not all JROTC commanders know how to fill out the forms, especially if they never had to nominate anyone before. Our Commander is a retired Colonel, retired AFROTC Senior instructor and now a JROTC Commander and only ever did two.
I am sorry you are having this issue. I will say maybe our situation was unique and NOWAY reflects on USAF academy.
I would help your child move up the food chain if you are not getting an answer or even have the JROTC Officer place the call.
Sorry

Thanks for your reply.
I've also heard that these nominations are automatic and will show up.
It is frustrating because nobody seems to have a clear cut answer.

Mark, I do not know what you mean by automatic?
I can say my childs JROTC nomination was not. We printed the forms off USMA website and USNA website, took them to school and the Colonel filled them out. He then attached verification that the JROTC unit was Honor unit with Distinction/merit for it was a cross service request.
The Colonel himself tried to navigate the new USAF website and was confused of the who, what, where to send anything to at the USAF academy.
We then priority mailed them to the regional representatives.
They showed up on the websites after the regional representatives verified and validated them as true/accurate.

I can only speak from our experiences, but do not believe anything is automatic for no one at the academies can possibly investigate over 15,000 applicants/actual candidates. I would go to the USAF academy website itself and email admissions and tell them of your difficulty. This is what we had to do and got a reply immediately.
With the extreme competative nature and this year being higher then normal applicants, I would not let your students fate rest in the hands of anyone else's assumptions.
Call.

Unfortunately, the problem w/ the AFA and JrROTC nom is not unique with jmark1616.

We had the same problem w/ our JrROTC commander. He has no clue and told my son that "we don't do that". Fortunately my son has a Presidential and a Senator nom already, so we didn't pursue the JrROTC route at all.

jamark1616, I don't think they are automatic at all. My son thinks there are 20 of them.

I don't think there is an actual application. I think the AFJROTC commander sends in the nomination. The JROTC unit has to be a Distinguished Unit which involves a lot of work. My DD has an AFJROTC nomination and it just showed up on her application status page. And there are only 20 slots available for who knows how many nominees so it seems pretty competitive.

guardianvg,

If there is an application, we sure haven't been able to find one either. It sounds like my daughter's AFJROTC instructor did the same as yours. He simply wrote a letter recomending her for a JROTC nomination and faxed it to USAFA admissions. She already has an LOA and we're waiting on a congressional nominations to come out. We're trying to cover all the bases.

Definitely get as many options as you can! It gives the Academy more ways to get your daughter in. Best of luck!

Is this the same for another branch's JROTC that is an honor unit? Also, just as a side question: you can get a JROTC nom to multiple academies, right?

Yes, independent forms off the Academy admission website, same process.

Really...cause I could not find these on the website (Academyadmissions.com)...as well as others according to what has been posted on this thread.

Also, you can get a JROTC nom to multiple academies, right? (If not known, a simple no answer will suffice and I can look elsewhere)

I think sometimes people post their ideas without really thinking about the thread title and content. This one is about JrROTC nominations to the AFA, not any other service academy. And there is not a form on the AFA admissions web site...apparently there is for the USMA & USNA as it has been offered as a solution to this problem, but it is not the right solution.

Class of 2014 candidate application trials...

My son's JROTC instructor called USAFA (first the 1-800 number) and got the response "no form...just type a letter." Then I thought he should call the point of contact on the Candidate Portal site (Ms. Sandy Ware). There is a form. USAFA Form 0-762...and she then emailed it to the JROTC instructor at my son's school. It wasn't "clean" and it looked like a form that had been scanned numerous times. Bottom line, the Academy sends 5 blank forms to each JROTC unit that qualifies as a "unit of distinction" but who knows where the envelope goes and who opens it! My son's JROTC instructor said he had received the forms in previous years, but not this one. So, just contact your representative listed in the candidate portal and you should get straight information. I was an Army ROTC recruiter for six years of my 21 in the Army. I also have a daughter at USAFA now, twin sons seeking appointment(s) this fall. So, if you still can't get the help you need, you can email me directly and maybe I can help. This is a tedious process and it requires a lot of patience, persistence, and dedication!
