Principal Nomination received

Hello everyone I was hoping someone could help shed some light on a few questions that I have regarding the Principal Nomination I received from my congressman.

From my understanding as long as I am qualified, then by law USMA must offer me admission. Correct?

And how do I get a better understanding of the minimum academic requirements? I attended SLS this summer and won two awards there, my test scores are good. Am i academically qualified?
 
Im going to go out on a limb and assume that since you have a Principle Nomination you are academically qualified. I would just make a quick phone call to the admissions office and make sure. Congrats and good luck!
 
I second that if you received a principal nomination (I did too!) you are most likely going to be academically qualified. I might be wrong about this, but I think academic standards vary depening on location and how competitive your area is, and I don't think there are minimums, just averages posted. Obviously if your congressman granted you a principal nomination (after reviewing your application which shows your grades and ecs, etc.) they think you would make an excellent candidate, and that the academy will see that. So good luck and hopefully an appointment will be arriving to you shortly!

Actually as best I know this is incorrect.

This is what is true. However, there are many USMA candidates with a nom that are "qualified." USMA is bound by no law to admit all "qualified" persons with a nom. They give appointments to the best of the "qualified" candidates with a nom. I believe there are about 4,000 candidates with a nom that are "qualified."
 
Actually, it is correct if they are designated as a PRINCIPAL nomination. Congressmen/Senators can use different methods of submitting their candidates/slates, but if they select a principal nomination, BY LAW, if that candidate is qualified, the academy MUST offer them an appointment, even if the academy would feel another candidate on the slate is more qualified. In a competitive slate, basically the MOC allows the academy to choose who it believes is best.
 
Interesting, is this true for all Service Academies?

Also, is there a standard definition for "qualified"?

At least for Army, Navy and AF. I know CG doesn't use nominations, and don't know how MMA works.

Each academy sets its own standards for qualification. Usually for Navy at least the term used is 3Q'd - meaning triple qualified - academically/scholastically (I've heard both terms used), physically (CFA), and medically (Dodmerb). All of these vary by the academy. Some medical conditions will DQ you from one academy and not another. Some academies weigh different sections of the CFA more heavily than others so it's possible you could be qualified at one and not another. Scholastic qualification also varies - I know Navy only looks at Math and English off the ACT, while AF looks at (and figures in) all 4 sections.

Navy sends out "Scholastically Qualified" letters, but I don't believe the other two academies do. Your liaison officer (BGO/MALO/ALO) should be able to tell you if you are scholastically qualified. I've heard of people getting letters from AF telling them they were not deemed "competitive" because of some factor in their scholastic profile - low ACT score or low GPA for example, but I don't think they send a "Qualified" letter. I know the statuses on the AF website indicate it to some extent - you won't become a "candidate" from "applicant" if you aren't qualified.
 
Does anyone know what would happen if I was deemed academically not qualified?

Would USMAPS be a big possibility considering I received the principle nom?

I highly doubt I am not going to be qualified, but I just want to be prepared for anything?

my 0.019654 cents. If your MOC is like every other MOC, you submitted a transcript with your packet. I highly doubt that you were awarded principal without being academically qualified.

For the AFA, I believe they are the only SA that posts their SAT/ACT mins to be deemed competitive. If they are on par with the other SAs, your min for CR/V would be be 490/25. They do not state a min for M.

I got a Principal Nomination for the USAF to. Just have to get that dyslexia waiver and pass the CFA
 
I just received a nomination from my congressman, statistically speaking, how many of those who are nominated receive actual appointments?
