Does anyone know if you are allowed to bring outside food into the academy.

For example, if we are visit during plebe year, can we bring food in and meet our son at Dry Dock if he has free time?

Two separate questions. Care packages are always permitted. I understand they are "searched" these days for "contraband" (stuff you're not allowed to have as plebes) but food is permitted far as I know. In my day no one searched anything but there wasn't much stuff we weren't allowed to have other than stereos and those were hard to smuggle in care packages in the 1980s.:yllol:

During the ac year, I believe plebes are allowed to "drag" (escort) parents on the yard when they have town or yard liberty (Saturdays and Sundays). Not during plebe summer. So, on WEs during Ac year, you should be able to meet your son on the yard or (when he has liberty) in town -- as well as drop off care packages.

Someone please correct me if this has changed.

Yeah, I don't recall anybody searching our care packages either. But my sons said their packages were inspected - more so at the beginning of Plebe Summer than at the end. They told me that the Firsties took a cursory look at it toward the end.

Smuggling stuff is half the fun! I sent them each a penlight, inside a small pack of Cheetohs that I glue-gunned closed after opening. I don't know if they were allowed to have a penlight or not - but it was just fun smuggling it. I knew they wouldn't get in much trouble for something like that, anyway. Now, an iPod or cellphone would probably mean BIG trouble.

The penlights were never discovered. Plebes 1 - Firsties 0 :shake:

Thanks for the info - and good to know that care packages are allowed.

I was also wondering if, say, we are down for a football game, and our plebe has yard liberty - can we bring in dinner (a pizza, or some other food from a restaurant in town) and eat it in "Dry Dock".

I just didn't know if we could walk through the gate with restaurant food or not.

Thanks for everyone for all your advice - we're very excited about this new chapter in our son's life.

Hi,

During AC year, Plebes can order in food on Friday night and Saturday (delivered to visitor center gate). They also bring in/back food from town when they have Saturday liberty.

My experience is that when they have liberty on Saturday, they would prefer to eat off the yard.

I have taken my plebe on a run to Target to stock up on single serving soups and other snacks that can be kept in her room. Each company has a ward room with a microwave that can be used to heat things up.
