I'm trying to convince my parents to buy me a rifle for my 18th birthday. As a plebe, will I be allowed to bring a rifle with me when the academic year starts and store it somewhere? Also, is there a shooting range on the yard? Thanks.

I have never heard of anyone bringing a rifle...I doubt you will be allowed to bring a weapon on base easily. We have a range under bancroft and one across the river, but you only use those during Plebe summer or if you are on the pistol or rifle team. You won't be able to just go down to the range and use it when you want. USMA has a system like that, but as far as I know USNA doesn't.

so you don't shoot guns at USNA after plebe summer? What about those going marines -- don't they need to use guns?

No...what BucsNBraves13 was saying was that you only use the "range under bancroft" during plebe summer or if on the rifle/pistol teams. From what I've seen and heard, you do get to shoot guns :)shake:) if you choose to do Marine summer training.

Coast Guard Academy has a gun locker that you can check your personal weapons into. It's rarely open, and that doesn't mean you can actually shoot them on the range all that often. I had paintball guns there (they were restricted elsewhere), however I never went down and almost forgot them when I was graduating. They've got to have a Gunners Mate you can talk to about that.

Cracked:
If you want to bring a weapon with you your best bet will be to find a secure storage place off-base. Perhaps a gun club would offer secure storage with membership that would also allow you somewhere to shoot.

Officially the only shooting on a military range will be conducted with military issue weapons firing military issued ammunition, at the minimum there must be a Range master and a Range safety officer present at all times when the range is hot.

Checking a weapon into the armory is a long process. If you do receive permission to store your weapon in the armory you will be met at the gate by security, your weapon will be surrendered to security, you and your weapon will be escorted to the armory. The weapon will be inspected by yourself and armory personnel for all distinguishing marks, scratches, dents, dings they will be noted. If you have a locking case now would the time to use it. The weapon will then be placed in secure storage. You will not be permitted to check out your weapon just to look at it or show your friends. Your weapon is in storage for long term and can't be checked out for week-end shooting.
If you decide to put up with all this, keep in mind your request will have to be approved by the base armorer the chances of that happening are near 0 due to secure storage space restrictions. Trust me on this one, I've been the base armorer.

Marine's Rifle Creed
by Major General William H. Rupertus (USMC, Ret.)

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...

My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit...

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my rifle clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...

Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We
are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!

This is what your talking about, right?

Given the recent episode at Ft Hood, it is reasonable to expect that miscellaneous private weapons will not be permitted on the Yard without strict supervision. I would suggest you plan to focus on the established curriculum for the immediate future and consider a private weapon once you have a better handle on USNA's requirements for such a situation.

LITS is on the right track.:thumb: From a DI or TI "your" when stated by the recruit "my". "One is for fightin" and so on.

This is my rifle

This is my gun

One is for killing

The others for fun

So until this war is over

Or until your time is done

This is your rifle and this one is your gun

Thirty years have passed since I stepped off that plane

The nightmares haven't ended and neither has the pain

I've drank my share of liquor and smoked my share of grass

But I can't unload the memories or these few words from my past
