The LOA candidates do not count on your congressman's slate of nominations.





This is a popular misconception which has been around for several years and seems to gain relife every few months. Ann addressed it not more than a month ago. But here goes.

Federal law does not address LOAs. They were created by the SAs themselves for their own benefit. Therefore they must comply with US Code Title 10.......

If the MOC submits a competitive slate, the top candidate, LOA or not, based solely on merit, is granted that appointment and counts against his 5 total that can be in the SA at any one time. If he submits a Primary candidate and that candidate is fully qualified, again, LOA or not, that candidate will receive the appointment and be counted against that MOC's total. All candidates who do not receive primary nominations, MOC, Pres, Vice Pres, Secretary of service, ROTC, or whatever, LOAs included, will be placed in the national pool as selected alternates. LOAs, by their nature, will rise to the top of this pool. THIS IS WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT ALL CANDIDATES ATTEMPT NOMINATIONS FROM ALL SOURCES AVAILABLE.
 
Great idea to re-ignite the thread, I do agree many people don't get the whole LOA and how they are not charged to their MOC.

Many appointee lists are coming down with many appointees that have an LOA. Just because they are from your state or district does not mean that you are out of the running. All it means is they may or may not have been charged. People tend to forget that there is a huge pile of appointments out there that includes, Pres., VP, Supe, ROTC, and NWL, it is not just the 3 MOCs that you can obtain from within your state.

Also remember that many candidates have multiple LOAs. They cannot accept all appointments, thus, the appointee lists that are appearing now will have some duplicate posters. Eventually these appointees will have to call the ball and that will allow more appointments to open up.

Many MOC's do not even find out until April who was charged to them, this is due to the fact that the mass mailing goes out in March, some do not find out until June when they report for I-DAY(there will be a select few cadets that get that last minute phone call).
 
So would that make it more or less likely for a person with an LOA to get a nomination from a Congressman?
 
An LOA will likely improve your chances to receive a nomination. HOWEVER, just because you receive a nomination from a certain source does not mean it is charged to that source.
 
It was nice to see an old post from USNA69; he was my favorite curmudgeon on this site. Hopefully he still lurks from time to time and can see that his wisdom is appreciated! :thumb:

He came back twice under different names and was promptly banned each time.

I hear he posts under the name "mombee" over at CC.
