So I have a birthday coming up and asking for something like a game system seems stupid since i can't take it to west point. Does anyone have suggestions on stuff i can ask for that will help me at west point or that is required?

His first year my son wanted an optical mouse and better speakers. He also asked for a Droid this past year.

From your screen name it looks like you might be starting this summer, in which case you need to look at some of the earlier posts about what you can bring. Knife, flashlight, disposable camera for beast. Not much is allowed until you are done with basic.

My son is like you ! For Christmas we bought him a leatherman ,a watch that will last thru plebe summer and a pair of the Nike (not sure of the proper name) combat type boots.

That is my understanding from a friend who is a cadet. They can purchase them in the cadet store.

There was an extensive discussion regarding the boots to buy 2-3 weeks ago. The title of the thread is "Boots and Shoes for Class of 2014." It is very specific about the brands allowed and it was very specific that Nike was not one of the approved brands. Actually, I thought this was one of the most informative threads and highly advise that you read all of the entries.

Hmmmmmm .. So you are saying that they can not wear the Nike boots ?

I went back to the the thread that Grannie is referring to. Very informative. Seems pretty clear to me that during beast it must be an APPROVED boot. After beast that may lighten up, but I don't know.

I talked to Deb Dalton today, and her direct quote was "The approved boots are mentioned in the letter. If they call AAFES and order via their phone line, they will be directed to the right boot. NIKE is not authorized. If they show up with the wrong boots, they will indeed be issued the correct boots."

My Plebe son has a pair of the Nike boots that he ordered from the Cadet Store after Beast. I don't know if they can worn during Beast, but he really likes them now.

What I got out of the thread is that while plebes may be wearing them after the Beast assignment, Nike boots are not allowed during that period. The other important thing I learned was the name Deb Dalton and the Facebook blog she moderates. Actually, we received a gracious email from her shortly after our son accepted his appointment in which she invited contacts (through phone or email) should we or our son have questions.

Interesting! Thank you for the information. My son's friend who is a cadet told us those are the boots he would buy. Maybe he was not aware he could not wear them during beast !

My birthday is tomorrow. My parents are giving me print-outs of low quarters and boots to represent the pairs they will be buying me as a late birthday present when the candidate portal reveals the approved models.

:shake: Had to do this with many presents for my youngest son for Christmas, who wanted things that were special order and of course waited to tell me until too late. So he got several presents that had say a pair of socks or gloves inside (for bulk) and a printed picture of what he was waiting for in the mail! On the plus side, Christmas has been continuing for him as he's gotten them all over the past couple weeks! Somehow I don't think of boots and low quarters as quite as exciting as presents though!
