I have a question dealing with someone who denies their ROTC scholarship.

I just applied for an AFROTC scholarship and I know alot of USAFA hopefuls apply to ROTC as a backup. I would assume that alot of people that got accepted to AFA also got accepted to ROTC, but for the guys set on the academy, turn down the rotc scholarship.

All of those turned down offers of scholarships for ROTC, will headquarters give it to someone else, or is it just unused? Im curious because im wondering if im ultimately competing with people who got LOA's for example to AFA.

thanks, mdsu

I would like to know what happens to those unaccepted scholarships as well. Are they given to the next runners up or just discarded?

Does anyone know?

As I understand the ROTC plan, the military depends on ROTC to supply the majority of it's commissioned officers. They (each branch) knows how many they need to bring in as freshmen in order to graduate X amount of officers. I say all of that just to venture my guess that the military uses ALL of the ROTC scholarships that they have funding for. Keep in mind that they also have In-College scholarships that they need to fund. Just my opinion....

I didn't think about the in college scholarships. Based on that I would think that they discard declined scholarships and use the money for some other scholarship program later on. Now that I think about it, it would probably make things too complicated to give other people the declined scholarships because it would be too late in the process for them to give their answer.

I may be wrong but I think they award more scholarships than they actually have money for to allow for those that decide to enroll in a SA or another ROTC program. Also I think they continue to give scholarships through May.

I don't know how accurate it is, but I was told that that is how in college schorahips are funded. Some years where there is a high acceptance level from high school scholarships, the availability of in college scholarhips is limited.

Afarldad: Your understanding of the process makes sense to me. I believe one thing is certain, no government agency (including the military) is going to give unspent funds back to the treasury. If by some chance one of the military branches doesn't have enough interested high school seniors to accept all of their 4 year ROTC scholarships, they will still need to recruit X amount of officers and will use that ROTC money to accomplish that task. I may be mistaken, but I've read that a couple of years ago the Army was in that situation and AROTC In-College scholarships were readily available and fairly easy to secure.

At least one of the ROTC applications asked if the candidate was applying to other ROTC programs and/or service academies. Can't remember which one. I'm sure each ROTC program expects for a certain percentage to be accepted and then returned.
