This funny story happened to me today and I though I'd share it.
Well my school has only had about 4 people even start a service academy application in the past 15 years, and currently has 1 cadet at USMA who graduated from my school. My guidance counselor told me I might be able to talk to him but I had no luck. Anyways yesterday my track coach was talking about him and then I found I that I was had the cadet's name wrong.
So today I was helping with a recruiting booth for the C.A.P. and the area we had a booth in had a brochure, and I noticed West Point was on it. So I looked for it and I saw this huge man (about 6" 6'! But he was super nice) behind a table with a lot of brochures. So I talked to him and he asked me questions when he asked me where I went to school. When I told him he said, "Hey, I live in the same town. My son also graduated from the same school and he goes to USMA now." Then I looked at his name tag and I noticed that he had the same last name as the previously mentioned cadet. When I made the connection I told him that I had tried to find a little about his son. So he told me he would definitely see if he'd want to talk. I also found out he is a MALO and will most likely be my MALO when I apply next year.
So I think it's awesome I'll get to talk to the only cadet from my school (in at least 15 years, the only cadet) and have a MALO live close to me and knows what I come from, since he has a son who's been through my school and application process.
I also talked to a small recruiting table for enlisting nearby and the recruiting NCO told me he was stationed at USMA before but he was pretty tired so i didn't get much from him.
But then...
I went back to my recruiting booth and I put my pile of papers down. Then when I went home I lost his card with his info and his son's e-mail on it. Such bad luck and not a good first impression, huh?
By the way, can I contact Admissions for my MALO's information even though I am not a candidate yet? And also for any current cadets, are your e-mails @usma.edu? The MALO wasn't sure if they used @usma.edu for e-mails anymore.
