Importance of tiers

So my application for the nrotc scholarship is quite strong or so I've been told, but up until now I believe I have been passed from board to board. In this case no news is good news because rejection notices go out right away, but I can only wonder why I keep getting bumped. I applied under a tier 3 major (sorry Navy, I don't want to be an engineer, scientist, or mathematician ;), so might I be correct in assuming that the scholarship money is doled out to tier 1 and 2 major applications first and we 3s get what's left?

Per the Navy ROTC website: Tier 1 - engineering programs of Navy interest, Tier 2 - other engineering, math and science programs, Tier 3 - Foreign language and remaining academic programs. In order to keep pace in this high tech and diverse environment, approximately 85% of Navy Option NROTC scholarships offers will be awarded to students interested in completing a Tier 1 or Tier 2 academic major.

Do you know the Tier percentages for Marine option scholarships?
 
yep. Son was contemplating Chinese major, but knew that Tier 3s were rare. So he decided on Math major and will add in language at college. From what I understand, Foreign Language is the main Tier 3 major, but I may be mistaken. If your application is strong, it will work out for you.
 
I was told it's strong, and I'm doing well in my USNA application. I know about the tiers I read their "85%" thing too, doesn't really answer my question though. For example, board sees my application and someone else's who is weaker than mine, but theirs has a tier 1/2 major. Do they auto bottom mine and compare that person's to the other tier 1/2 majors or do they offer scholarships to tier 3 majors from the beginning? Personally I think the Navy is making a mistake with the "50% engineering corp in place by 2015" thing, they are going to lose what is valued the most in every other governmental institution... social skills, but thats just an opinion. :wink:

There are those of us who have engineering and technical backgrounds that are VERY socially adept and have pursued Master's degrees outside of our technical majors. You might even have fun being around us! :eek:

And then there are those of us who have no engineering and technical backgrounds and still manage to be socially inept.:wink:

We have been told by a Marine Officer recruiter (in our house) and an MOI (in his office) that a Bachelors degree is the requirement, and that the academic major tiers does not apply. There isn't one. S is accepted in Ag School and they are fine with that. (heavy science btw...)
 
no no no, not saying engineers have no social skills in the way I think you mean. But there seems to be a stigma that majoring in something English/History related is for the "lower" of us, and I take offense to that. The math and hard sciences are great, but they don't teach the same reading, writing, speaking, and interactive skills that say an English or History major might :wink:. Many on the SA forums say that those who are in sports and therefore have less time take the easier major (at USNA that would be political science or english), and those really committed take the harder engineering or hard sciences. Just felt the need to defend my political science major :thumb:
