USNA Summer Seminar?

Does anyone have the link for the Summer Seminar application, or is it available yet?
 
While you're waiting for the application to open, make sure your "resume" is up to date. It will make filling out the application a lot faster and easier!

Ideas:
- Classes taken; be sure to note honors & AP Classes
- Class rank (if known) and size of class
- AP test scores (if available)
- PSAT, SAT, ACT scores (if available)
- ECAs; note any leadership roles
- sports; note any leadership roles
- honors & awards
- other areas of responsibility (part time job; summer internship; responsible for after school care for younger siblings, etc.) note time requirements

Does anyone know if the resume is supposed to be in any format, or if the application is anything like the USAFA SS app?
 
No particular format is needed. You'll be filling in the blanks in the on-line application. It's just easier to have all the information together and organized.

It's definitely not like the AF one where you included a resume. As 2012mom said, it's more filling in the blanks or answering questions/bubbles yes or no, for example "Varsity Sport yes/no", then a blank to fill in which one. At the end of each section (Academic/EC/Athletic), there was a space to fill in up to like 2000 characters (or similar, it's been a year since my son did it) and we took advantage of that space to put in anything critical like "Over 150 Volunteer Hours", "Received 5's on AP Calc and AP Physics Exams" - things like that which had nowhere to put them on the bubbles! Don't know if it helped, but he got in!
 
In addition, I believe there is a short statement that is required about why you want to attend USNA.
 
For summer seminar? Wow, I don't recall that at all. I know my son did it for the MOC's and for the actual applications (or some variance of it), but I swear he did the whole NASS application in about 5 minutes. Hardest part was that he clicked yes for wanting to be contacted by a coach for his sport and then had to find his HS coach's address/phone number, team stats, and things like that which he hadn't had available.
 
I got a brochure in the mail today about USNA Summer Seminar. On one page it stated that selections are based largely on geographic representation along with grades, EC's, class rank, and physical fitness. (Or something like that, I'm typing this on my blackberry from the waiting room at the dentist) I don't like the geographic representation part, since I'm right outside of NAS Pensacola. I think the Navy is very well represented here in the "cradle of naval aviation." Haha
 
I think that means to some extent that they try to have people from all over. If you're right near a large Naval presence (or the academy itself), then there will be more applicants (and hence more competition) from that area. However, my son met people at NASS from Annapolis, so they certainly take some from every area. Just will be a bit more challenging!
 
I will just submit the application and hope for the best! Lol, its hard to think about NASS right now. Just got two shots in the mouth and waiting for the dentist to come back so he can crown my tooth. I had a root canal, it was not fun. I hate that I got teeth from my moms side of the family. I swear I brush and floss and listerine every day!
 
My son just had his first root canal over the Christmas break as well, and had a similar view as to the "fun-ness" of it! :rolleyes: Your parents probably also won't be thrilled with the cost - used up all of his dental allowance for the year as of January 5th!
 
You shouldve seen their faces last summer when they got the bill for my wisdom teeth. Yikes!
 
We're in the opposite timeline. Now the dentist wants us to have his wisdom teeth out and our motivation to spend $2000 out of pocket is pretty low! :eek:

It's been 3 years but to this day I still feel including a resume helped get my D into NASS. A resume is a 30 second read that gives a tremendous amount of information to the reader beyond filling out the standard form. The "whole person" evaluation can be flushed out better with a resume and it's something that not every application will have and may get you noticed in a positive light.

My suggestion is to use the bullet style resume. It's clear consise information that can be read in 30 seconds or less. If memory serves there is a spot or field in the application called other information that will let you paste in the resume. Trick is this field allowed for X number of chacters so short and to the point is necessary.

Lastly I would strongly suggest you write the first pass of the resume but consult your parents or teachers on how to refine style and language. A good consise resume can help you a bad one can make you look stupid.

This is the first step in a muti-year journey for many of you. Best of Luck!
 
Curious how she submitted this when there was no place to attach it to an online application? Did she mail it to her RD separately? Personally, I think everything for NASS is online and would only be looked at that way. I guess possibly mailing it in would call attention to her somehow. I guess I'd feel more concerned that they'd think I was ignoring the instructions or something like that. Please understand - not trying to be critical at all, just wondering if it's really something worth doing!
 
Like I said it's been 3 years since the NASS application process but I remember a text box that allowed my D to paste in the resume as part of the application. That said in the current application the ablity to paste something in may or may not be there.
 
Okay, I was just wondering if she mailed it separately and if that was encouraged or not. As I said above, I believe there were still those text boxes at the end of each section last year but they were limited to about 2000 characters or similar. We put a lot in, but definitely had to prioritize (and tried not to repeat things like ACT scores that were already listed somewhere else on the application).
 
thanks. That is just the information I was looking for. Not the root canal part, but the part about how the application is set up is exactly what I was wondering about.
