Am I done?

Ok so I am 3Q'd, however I am lacking a nomination:

I applied to one Senator and to the VP for a nomination to USNA and didn't receive one from the senator.
Also applied to other Senator and my Congressman for nomination to USMA and received a principal nomination from my congressman.

So my main question is two parts:
1) When do you find out about who the VP nominates? (as selected by the academy... right?)
2) Am I officially out of the running then for USNA?

If you get a principal nomination, that's all you need.

Was it your choice not to try and get a nomination for both SAs from everybody or did they not let you?

Unfortunately I don't know when the VP sends out his notifications. Still, good luck

I realize that, however I got the principal nomination to USMA, not USNA.

Pachrian: And also, I was only allowed to choose one academy for each of my senators. For my congressman, I was able to rank it. At that point I wasn't sure which one was my number one choice and I originally had USNA as #1. Then I visited USMA right before I submitted my application to the congressman and switched it (bias I know since I didn't visit USNA yet haha). My district interviewed 48 people for all the academies and half of them had USNA as their first choice, so that's how I didn't receive a nomination to both like some people do.

Being honest and based on prior experience with candidates, your odds of receiving an appointment from USNA are extremely small. Not saying it won't happen -- there are VP noms and Supe's noms (for which you can't apply but can receive) but a lot more folks in your situation than available noms from those sources.

Also -- again being honest -- you are not as well positioned as someone who put all of his/her eggs in one basket (i.e., listed USNA as first choice for every nominating source) and still didn't get a nom. In this case, USNA knows that USMA was at least a viable option to you as you listed it first with two of your MOCs. Thus, they probably assume you are now happy b/c you got not only a nom, but also a principal nom, to your first choice.

I had this exact same thing happend to a candidate several years ago; he ended up at USMA and, I assume, happy there.

As I have previously posted, there is significant risk in "splitting" your nom choices. You have to make a decision at some point; doing it earlier helps your cause because it gives you the most chances to get a nom to that first choice.

If you would truly be equally happy at more than one SA, then what you did is fine. You got one of your first choices, so go with it. If USMA is no longer your first choice, you can try speaking with your RD and BGO but I can't tell you that your chances of securing an appointment to USNA are good. Not impossible, just not good.

[Note: the above obviously doesn't apply to USCGA, for which no noms are required.]

usna1985: Thanks for your post. I appreciated the honesty and took no offense. And yes, I am extremely happy to be attending USMA. I also realize that the odds of getting the VP nom or Supe's nom are really low and I have realized awhile back that I most likely won't be receiving either of these. Thanks

Typically the VP nom is activated by USNA when they have a highly desirable candidate who has no other nom to USNA. It is not necessarily an annual occurrance - only when needed. It does happen; my second year as a BGO I had a candidate offered an appointment on the VP nom.
