I go to a small high school where I might possibly be the first ever student to attend a service academy, and before it got out that I was going to one, the teachers were about the only people who knew what a service academy is. The other day I was talking with some friends about my appointment, and one of them asked, "Is that something you have to apply for, or do they just kind of award it to you?"

My daughter got this response from her grandmother: "The military is nice, but I wish you were not giving up on college, that would just be a shame."
HAHAHAA!! These are too funny...although, I must admit, I knew VERY little about SA's unitl my son decided to pursue this option! Only parents and applicants that have been thru the "Process" understand all that is involved! My friends with graduating HS seniors, have no idea what son has done to have all of the application process in order (son has been working on it from Februaury of his Junior year, (applying for the NASS) until last bit of paper submitted Sept. 23rd, this fall!!)...in fact, one evening he managed to apply (and be accepted the same week) to 4 civilian colleges...all done on-line...certainly MUCH easier than applying to the Service Academies!! The applicants deserve a lot of credit for their diligence and hard work regarding the SA applications!! BIG SALUTE TO ALL!!

Way back, when I was...a junior maybe in high school, a kid a year ahead of me got into West Point. I remember saying, "wow, Kevin was so smart, why did he just settle?" Well that comment did not make my German teacher very happy. She wasn't a West Point grad, but she and her husband were both Army officers.
Little did I know two years latter I would be at a service academy too.
My parents and I got those comments all the time "oh why isn't he going to college."
Some times there is a glimmer of hope, someone who knows, but most will not. I don't take it personally. Even with in the services, you will have some, generally from another commissioning source, who don't understand. CGA is a little different, because OCS and DCO school is on the same grounds as CGA.

When my son earned an appointment to UNSA, the folks at the scholarship night awards got it ... his BGO came and thanked everyone for paying thier taxes so my son could get a $300,000 educatation ... the gasp in the audience was audible ...
yet when posting "who's going where" on the school bulliten board, it was hard to get the folks to put him in the "out of state college" list as opposed to the "enlisted" list ...

Haha, there was definitely an audible gasp at the school awards ceremony when my ALO announced the value. One of my friends knew it was a big thing, but not that big. He definitely mouthed a "Holy F@#$!" when the number was said. I took a little restraint not to smile too much at that. 
Haha, yeah one of my friends the other day was asking me when I was going to get my signing bonus.
Son’s very liberal grandmother does not understand why son wants to join the military (USNA) instead of going to real college w/NROTC scholarship. She thinks it is wrong for NAVY to force son to go to war for 5 yrs after college. It is comical when she asks why son wants to go to war after college instead of getting a job. Oh well, we keep trying.
Unfortunately, too many people believe defending our rights and freedom should be done by other people's kids.

LOL at this one!
This one's a little different, but I guy I know who was thinking about enlisting told me the other day that he thought the Army had an NFL team and he was going to try and play for them. I think he might have misinterpreted the Army/Navy game a little bit.

i have friends parents all the time who ask one of the following about West Point:
1) oh did you not save any money for college?
2) are there people in the military there?
3) how do you register for that? maybe i'll have my son/daughter go there if they don't get their grades up!
