Major: Computer Engineering (Hopefully double major B.A.)

GPA: 3.87/4 (unweighted)

AP classes: AB Calc (5), US (5), Chem (4), English Language(4), Computer Science, Physics, French, Government
Honors: Pretty much everything. Honors track for English since middle school, honors track for social studies since middle school, accelerated math level, doubled up in sciences, honors french

Extra Curriculars:
Plenty of volunteer hours, Boys State, Captain of the math team, Captain of the soccer team, vice president of my class freshman year, president sophomore year, National Merit Commended.

PFAs perfect. 9:18 1.5 mile, 66 pushups, 55 sit ups.

What's the deal? My interview was amazing, I was with the guy for 2+ hours talking about everything. I may be venting but I just don't understand.

I feel for you, my son has similar seemingly-amazing stats, plus aerospace engineering as his major at TX A&M.

What in the heck do they want, if not you and my son???

I am sorry!!!! I think the AF is making a big mistake not letting u meet all the boards.

In the conversation with maxwell my husband - a USAFA grad - said "i firmly believe something went VERY wrong during the last board!" I have to agree with the statement, especially when I see stats like yours!

Best of luck! What is plan B?

I don't really have much of a back up unfortunately. EFC is zero so unless I get mad good aid the futures lookin rather dim. Hope to god they made a mistake or something.

This does seem highly unusual. I understand there are a lot more applicants with the tough economic times, but looking at stats like that I really don't understand. I'm sorry guys.

I have to agree. Since when has getting a AFROTC scholarship become more difficult that getting into the AFA? I can't believe with stats like yours that you wouldn't have been a viable candidate for the AFA. Let me add my regrets also.

Basically the only hope I have now is that they messed up on the status message and I will meet the next board. I just don't get it haha. Donno what I'm gonna tell my parents. Ah well que sera

Randy, I know you must be feeling depressed now, but remember, there are other ways to get a scholarship to the Air Force. It is a very smart idea to go to your local community college for a couple of years. You can still participate in AFROTC. I know you don't want to hear this, but sometimes things are blessings in disguise. You now have the freedom to explore other interests you might have. You can try air force rotc (or any rotc) and see what interests you in college. Your life is all in front of you. If you really want to be in the Air Force, you will. My son didn't get a scholarship either and he had very good stats as well.

Randy, I am just so, so sorry for the turn this has taken for you.

Let me fill you in on part of the conversation I just had w/my son. This is why the AF offers 2 and 3 year scholarships, as well.

Do what you can this year - and if that includes taking out a loan for your first year and hoping like hell for the best next year, then that's what you do. If the AF was a means to an end (the education first and foremost, AF scholarships just a way to get there) then I guarantee this is a blessing in disguise.

If the AF is the only thing you've ever seen yourself doing, you will. W/your numbers you should get good financial aid and you can then concentrate on next year's scholarship opportunities.

Other than asking them to check again for an error, you could try the DoDMERB website and see if it lets you sign in with your SSN and birthdate. I just tried it to make sure I actually got the scholarship (if it's an error on one end, why not the other?) and sure enough it let me in.

It is a long shot I know, but it's another check you can try.

Even though I did this earlier, I also tried it again. The scholarship is showing up on both the AFROTC scholarship tracking site and DoDMERB.

What is your major Eagle 1?

What is your major Eagle 1?
The three I put down are, in order:
1) Aerospace Science (which the interviewer wrote in "Aeronautical Science" for the major at Embry-Riddle - they told me I could put Aerospace Science on my online app since that was the closest name) (Non-Technical Major)

2) Meteorology (Technical Major)

3) Computer Science (Technical Major)

I'm hoping if they picked a major for me that it will be one of the first two choices. I like working with computers which is why I made it my third choice, but still it's my last choice for a reason.

If you call the phone number on the AFROTC scholarship site, they should be able to give you the details (Type & restrictions). Strangely, while my daughter applied for a nursing major, she was given a non-tech Type 7 that she can use for any non-tech majors. It is not limited to only nursing according to the rep at Maxwell.

Hey Randy ... this is tough! last year my son recieved a full Navy ROTC scholarship, but only a lower tier Air Force ROTC scholarship offer ... the word was Air Force was cutting way back on scholarships. I don't know if it is true ... but it made us/him feel better about it ... keep applying for all types of aid ... !

I read somewhere that they cut off the January board early, so I am wondering if they review the candidates alphabetically and if so, they may have had to stop before they got to the far end of the alphabet? Its a huge stretch but its baasically the only explanation of the lack of scholarship awards. I'm interested to see at which end of the alphabet do those who were denied versus awarded fall? I'm an S so I'm used to being last. Again this is a completely ridiculous chance. Just lookin for some shred of hope for us unfortunate ones hahaha

There are other options.
The AF has on campus "express scholarships" for majors they are in short supply of-for instance electrical engineering and many foreign languages. They can be applied for after one semester. You can get more info about them from the PMS.
The Air National Guard in your state may be an option as well as Army National Guard-both will pay for college.
With your stats you would easily qualify.

sorry, wrong board thread. Meant to put on AROTC.

My last name begins with R.

hahahha yeah it was pretty much half a joke... I appreciate all y'all puttin up with my dramatics hahah

Just a side note but they do put alot of stock into those they feel will actually be motivated enough to want the scholarship and go to the Air Force rather than another scholarship somewhere else. I am not saying you are not...this is just an example....someone may have lower scores in SAT's, GPA, no captain of varsity sport, BUT they are the cadet commander for the past 7 years of the local Civil Air Patrol (USAF Aux), they already have a private pilot's license and have traveled around the country for the past 7 years every summer visiting Air Force bases as part of the commitment. They do extremely well with their interview when they demonstrate that they actually know more about the Air Force than most AFROTC cadets. They also probably told them that they did not apply to the AROTC or NROTC because their goal was solely to be an Air Force officer. I know someone like that and they got a scholarship. Basically, the Air Force was certain this person was committed to the Air Force. I'm not saying that explains anything specific to your case but you can imagine there is some subjectivity to these decisions.

Anyway, there are more boards to come and other ways to get scholarships...especially with your stats.

Good Luck!
