We have a foot of snow on the ground and another foot coming Wednesday. I was told I had to retake my CFA and that it is due Feb 15th. I have been training for it and feel like I can improve my scores. The only thing is that there is no where to run the mile.( The track is covered in snow.) I looked at the candidate booklet online and could not find anything related to running the mile on a treadmill or inside.

Has anyone had or heard about doing it this way? I really need to complete my CFA and I don't know what to do.

Thanks!

wait for it to melt? :) haha

find somewhere that isnt covered in snow, a road or somethin, measure it out, and just run. that's what i'd do.

Any chance you have a gym or a Y with an indoor track? Nearly all the Y's I've been to have them - yes, it's usually like 14 laps to the mile, but if you went off the busy time you'd probably be okay. And I bet if you explained what it was for they'd help you out and let you do it even if you weren't a member.

Didn't you go to summer seminar last summer? (Seem to recall the name). Did you only do AF's? If you did one at a different academy, you can call and have them submit the scores to AF. Assuming you know this, but just in case!

I've never heard of anyone doing it on a treadmill. Guess you could call the academy and see what they tell you! Personally I'd think it wouldn't be allowed if you're not allowed to have someone pace you.

Ya that's what I figured in regards to the pacing.

I did take it at USMA SLS and passed. I received an appointment to USMA so I thought my scores were fine. About a month ago USAFA told me that I needed to retake my CFA because my scores were too low.

It's werid because I would have thought that USMA would be harder on the CFA then USAFA, but I guess not!

Good luck! I am just nervous about pull-ups as I only did 5, but I think I'll be ok. My mile was 6:51 I think?

Just a piece of advice...the less "laps" you have to do the better. The reason is mental...when you have to continuously look round to the same point, you feel like you're doing it forever, but when you do less/no laps, you have a goal that you want to reach as fast as possible and it is easier mentally. So if I were you and it was safe and you can run as fast as you need to, do the straight road measure mile for CFA.

Def. go with the road measurements. Indoor tracks, gyms, and the like make it very redundant as 2012 cadet said. Wear a tobaggon until you get too hot, then throw it off. Otherwise, I recommend shorts and a tee shirt. (Was doing that last week in the snow. Not a foot, but we had 10") Good luck man.

Very doubtful. Treadmills require less exertion than running outside. Technically, you're running in place, so when you're on a treadmill you don't have the friction of the air moving past your body, along with a lack of wind. This accounts for an around 13 seconds faster per-mile pace, but this number varies with speed.

Also, the treadmill moves the "ground" out from under you, and does pacing for you. It is definitely not an accurate way to measure your mile time, even if it is good for getting a workout.

haha yeah, a treadmill would probably improve your time by a noticeable amount.

Also running inside on a small track will increase your time a lot because of the increased number of turns. It is much faster and direct to run in a straight line and it takes more energy to change direction and turn more frequently.

This is all very interesting, but not very helpful to the OP. Time is short - if they were here (or in many parts of the country right now!), there is simply no realistic place they could run the CFA outdoors. The roads are not clear. Anywhere. (Well, maybe the freeways, but I'd probably advise against doing the mile run there! ).

The deadline is soon. Depending on where they are, they can look at the odds of a road being cleared by then. If that's not realistic, then they may need to take 20 laps around a gym. Or a Y. Or whatever they can find. The alternative is waiting and reapplying next year. Yes, a smaller course is going to add seconds to their time. It'll be harder. Time to suck it up and persevere and take the test!

treadmills are not allowed... check the precandidates packet where it gives instructions about CFA
