I am filipino and I was wondering does that help my chances of getting into the Naval Academy? I read somewhere that it is not as competetive as if you were a White Male. Also will this help with getting a nomination as well.

Kumusta ka,

I'm filipino as well. Please be very cautious when posting threads like this as it stirs a lot of argument on the forum.

But as for your question, being a HIGHLY QUALIFIED minority is what appeals most to admissions. Race alone does not increase your chances of appointment even though some say otherwise. You should have the high merit and appropriate achievement to accompany your application.
And in your case, well I should say ours, Filipinos are Asians, and if your speaking about diversity recruitment, Blacks and Hispanics are prioritized over Asians just because of the emphasis of the outreach program.

But still, work hard, and rectify your goals and you will get in. Strive as if you have equal chances as anybody in getting in. By the way, when are you supposed to apply?

I'm sorry for not addressing the second part of your question. Race has very little consideration in the nominations selection process. You are competing with the best of the best kids in your region applying for the academy. This is the part based solely on your achievements and personal merit.

You may or may not be correct. What I wonder is how you could possibly know what were the considerations in a MOC's nomination selection process?

Filipinos unite:smile:...nah, I'm just playin. As for your question, just worry about being the best applicant you can be and leave it at that.

It's easier for minorities to get into the Naval Academy than it is for white males. Admissions says that they really look for highly qualified canidates who also happen to be minorities, but overall, at least from anecdotal experience, this is not true. Those minorities who are here do not fare as well in the company as the whites. Also, you can look to the statistics that show that minorities commit a significantly higher percentage of the honor and conduct violations than statistics say that they should account for, and furthermore, they, on average, have a lower QPR (the academy's version of GPA) than they're white counterparts.

The fact is that when the academy selects students to come, they choose from two pools, a white pool and a minority pool. They're are less canidates, and as a result a lesser quality of canidates, in the minority pool than in the white pool, and due to this fact it is easier to ger in as a minority than as a white male.

According to an article I read, I would say that minorities may have an edge because diversity among its officers is a top priority for the Navy. Here is quote from a Washinton Post article written in 2009.

"Of the 1,230 plebes who took the oath of office at the Naval Academy in Annapolis this week, 435 were members of minority groups. It's the most racially diverse class in the nation's 164-year history. Academy leaders say it's a top priority to build a student body that reflects the racial makeup of the Navy and the nation."

I agree 100% with Delrosario. Well said! Anyone who wants to attend an SA should be totally committed to working hard to get there, graduating and serving our country, because that's what it is all about.

As a male caucasian, I do hope that the appointment process is fair across the board. Obviously I have faith in that process and feel it is worth all the work I have put in to earn the confidence of my MOCs and the Board of Admissions at the Academy.

Go Navy!! (Go 2014 Candidates)

Memphis9489,

I attended the USAFA Diversity Recruitment Program (I was actually in K Delrosario's group) and was told that if I was not nominated by either of my senators or my MOC by a certain date, the USAFA Diversity Recruitment staff would search for another congressman who hasn't yet "used up" his entire slate. They would then request that the congressman use their nomination slot on me.

FYI, the Diversity Recruitment Program flies qualified applicants of diverse minorities and backgrounds to the Air Force Academy for a 3-day visit. It is USAFA's way of encouraging minorities to commit to the Academy.

i know some civilian colleges (ivy league and top schools) offer some incentive like this for minorities. however being Asian is not really a minority at top schools (we made up 5 percent of us population but take up 15-25 percent of study body at top schools). However it seems to be the opposite with SAs (take up less 10 percent of student body).

Being asian, i still plan on competitive regardless of race.
