I have heard some rumors that the Army will soon be looking at the applicants intended College Major as part of the selection process for obtaining a 4 year scholarship. We have met with a PMS at a local university and he stated that the selection of a Major has no effect. A ROO from a different college said that they will be looking at Math/Science/Engineering majors first. Has an official change taken place. My son will be applying for a scholarship soon, he is currently a junior in high school, he is planning on majoring in Political Science with hopes of Law School in the future. My older son is currently a MSII on scholarship, his major is History. Any information regarding this would be great.
Thank you

Army does not care about major. I can't see that changing - but you never know. Many PMS will discourage math/engineering/science because they want their cadets to have a high GPA.

Son has a four year AROTC scholarship that indicates "academic discipline" is "technical." Does that constrain him to a particular major? Thanks for your help.

NO. they want to know your major and each ROTC cadet must submit an academic plan which outlines their courses and plan for graduation. this is to make sure they graduate on time. a major can be changed but a new academic plan will have to be submitted.

If one were to change the major and submit an updated academic plan in spring semester of the junior year to engineering from english -- that would be frowned upon since it would seriously delay graduation.

Thanks, Just a Mom. You have been so helpful on these boards. So if I understand (but not wanting to be too thick) son can pick any major, but he will need to submit a plan regarding that major? Thanks.

Yep - and if he deviates from that plan he must submit another. It is how the Army keeps track of them and makes sure they graduate on time!
Probably sometimes during his freshman year he will have a one on one with his ROTC instructor. They will go over the plan together and send it in.
