I'm wondering if maybe the baseball coach, or coaches, will be available to speak with during NASS?
One of my sons is determined to play college ball and speaking to the coach, or even the possibility, would certainly increase his interest in NASS and applying to the academy.
How does the baseball program work? Do they have open tryouts?
I know they have summer camps but, my son won't want to miss any more travel games this summer than the week at NASS.

Yes, there is a specific night where they will bring in all the coaches and allow kids to go and meet them.

one of the last things we do at NASS is get the opportunity to meet with the coaches of the athletic team of choice. On the morning of departure, the NASS batallion assembles in alumni hall, each coach introduces him/herself on stage, and designates a section of the arena for the sport, then after all the coaches have the chance to speak, candidates can choose to go to any sport and fill out questionnaires/ get information/ ask questions etc. if they choose to do so. Not all coaches were able to be there, but i would say about 90% were present or had some sort of representation during this time.

As stated above most coaches are there for you to speak to. I went to the women's soccer area as I am interested in their program, and it was only the assistant caoch so it will depend by sport. For me they only talked about the program, stresses and schedules of playing a varsity sport, and a little of the recruiting process. For me it wasn't very helpful since I don't play club and they said that is the only area they recruit from. However it is most likely different for every sport. Remember you never know, you could walk on to a sport, though from my understanding it's fairly difficult. However that's not going to stop me from trying :thumb:

So, does that mean no open tryouts? Are all potential players only invitees? If you're not an invitee, does that significantly diminish the likelihood of making the team?
I've told my son the academic quality of the school comes before athletics, baseball is "icing", education is the cake!

Stage4Survivor~Have your son contact the baseball coach directly before NASS. Most sports are listed on the website with email addresses and possibly phone numbers for the coaches or team captains.

When DS was looking at USNA, he was able to contact the triathlon club advisor who met with us during a visit to Annapolis. Very positive and helpful answering all of DS's questions.

Coaches' names and contact information is listed in <www.navysports.com> along with the list of summer sports camps.

It has been my understanding that almost every sport is open to walk ons; not sure how many stick, however.

Best wishes

That's my attitude going in, academics first, possibility of varsity athletics second. As for open tryouts it is my understanding they are open to anyone, just hard to walk on as 1964BGO stated. Also as stated above contact the coach for baseball and goodluck to your son!
