I was wondering if any parents had any suggestions for cheap airplane tickets from Los Angeles to BWI? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Elaine - I think the biggest problem you're going to run into is the time differences. I'm not finding many options that will allow you to leave that day and still get there in time for CVW at 5ish. But flying out the night before ends up with having to find somewhere to spend the night. I checked quickly JetBlue, Air Tran, and Southwest for just a random April weekend, and can't find anything under $400 right now (for times that would work - I can find $200+ fares but they involve arriving late at night or leaving early in the morning going home, which would result in needing a hotel). One option I saw on Jet Blue was a redeye flight - leaving near midnight from CA and getting in near 11am, but then obviously you'd start out the visit exhausted. I usually use Orbitz for a comparison but know Southwest doesn't come up on that so check them separately as well. Good luck!

Edited to add that I also use Yapta to track fares, but my experience in the past few months is that the fares aren't changing much. I plugged in some for Orientation to Denver almost 2 months ago. I finally gave in and bought the tickets (more than I wanted to spend) about a month ago and the flights haven't changed at all since then in price. I'm sure it depends on the airline/day/location, but this is a site that at least will email you if/when it drops. Also Kayak is easy for comparing many flights and then sorting (or eliminating) the times/prices/locations/airlines you don't want to use.

You might check with the admissions office~possibly a sponsor family near DTA would be willing to help out so you come in a day early to give you more options for flights......

My only suggestions are to try various internet search engines AND each airline's website -- many offer good deals available only on the internet. I know it seems expensive now but, if your child decides USNA is right for him/her (and that's the critical "if"), this is but a drop in the bucket compared to college tuition.

Conversely, if he/she decides a SA isn't right, now is the time to figure this out and the money expended is well spent.

sometimes, flights to DC are cheaper and scheduled more often throughout the day.

I live right outside of DC. There are 3 airports you can chose from. BWI, Regan National as will as Dullas. You should be able to find one of those airports can accomodate the schedule you need. All of them have some sort of van service. Granted BWI is slightly closer to Annapolis but not by much in the scheme of things.

For Southwest you have to go to their website - www.southwest.com
look for flights from LAX to BWI - it won't be non-stop but some flights are just a stop and not a plane change.

The beauty of buying from Southwest - no charge for checked bags and if you need to change your flight for any reason - they don't penalize you.

Buddy pass

Do know anyone that works for Continental if so you can buy a buddy pass for $200.00. The only problem with this arrangement is you have to fly on stand-by. Good luck.

Southwest.com sometimes posts heavily discounted fares(online) on Tuesdays....Good Luck and Go NAVY !

THANKS EVERYONE! I think I'll be flying continental but i'll keep an eye out for southwest...I haven't placed the tickets yet...i'm hoping they'll come down
