UPDATE

I just attended a BGO Hub meeting yesterday.

Key points that may be of interest to you:

1. The number of applications this year has once again increased. Numbers being reported are around 17,000, a 2,000 increase from last year.

2. Having said that, the admissions board has stepped up their meeting schedule to review all candidate files. They are currently meeting every Tuesday and Thursday.

3. Each candidate file is given a thorough review. When asked "how many files are reviewed at each session," the answer we received was as few as "one," and as many as "100." Each file is scrutinized carefully before a decision is rendered.

4. The good news of #3 is that your file will be reviewed carefully. The bad news of #3 coupled with #1 is that there is a backlog of files waiting to be reviewed.

5. The goal remains to have all files reviewed by April 15th. We were also told this objective may not be met.

I offer this information as INFORMATIONAL ONLY. You can debate the pros and cons [I believe they are all readily apparent] but I am hoping it makes the waiting a bit more tolerable knowing that the Admissions Board is doing all they can to make sure they select the right candidates for the academy.

Best of luck everyone!

At this point I would think that, even with the 17000+ applicants, they would only be reviewing those with a nomination. Would that be a correct assumption?

Not necessarily. They are reviewing all records that are complete (except for medical). As has been stated before, you can get an appointment without a nom -- although it's extremely rare.

Please correct me if I am wrong but I thought the only truly relevant numbers would be, the number of applicants who were assigned candidate numbers, then those 3Q'd with nominations, and the candidates with LOA's. Does anyone know what those numbers are?

Navy2010 is a BGO and very aware of the all the permutations of the numbers: 3 Q'd plus nom, etc........if she's telling us that there are 17,000 applicants and the review process is swamped right now, then I'd believe her. And perhaps relax a bit if the appointment letter is not forthcoming on the same time frame as in year's past.

17,000+ is an ego driven number. It's meaningless unless they want to appear more popular than they really are in the world of college admissions.

It serves no other purpose.

The "17k" number includes everyone who typed in their name and submitted either a transcript or an SAT score. 10,000 of those "applications" were rejected 3 months ago.

Only when they truthfully count and release the number of completed applications will their number actually mean something.

There's a break down on navy's site for last year.

"Approximately 2,000 candidates are found fully qualified (scholastic, medical, CFA, and have obtained a nomination) each year. Of that number, about 1,500 will receive appointments and approximately 1,200 become midshipmen."

Are these numbers the same again this year?

Would they review a file multiple times? Months ago I received a letter saying I'm academically qualified. The letter came well after my file is complete. so I assume they have reviewed my entire file? Would they look at it again?

I received two letters stating I was scholastically qualified, I was wondering if this second letter could have meant to be a LOA instead or if I jumped through another hoop in the Admissions Board circus. Anyone?

It is not an LOA unless is says so. I don't think that they send out LOAs this late anyways. I have also heard of people receiving repeat letters so this is probably what it is. You are scholastically qualified .

Don't be afraid to show yourself eager, without being pesty! (Prospective midshipmen, NOT parents!) If you have recently achieved any meaningful awards that you want to have considered by the admissions board, let USNA know. If you have received an appointment from another academy, you might want to consider having the candidate call to speak with the academy rep. Let them know you are considering your options, but that USNA is on top, if they are. Parents, sit on your hands. These are potential future officers. Let 'em start fighting their own battles...with a little coaching, of course! :)
