I just got my scores for the February ACT. And I'm fairly pleased. :thumb:

Which scores does the Naval Academy look at? Because I feel I did well in all except for the Science section which was okay but not stellar. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I was thinking they looked at composite. On SAT it is math and critical reading. So, correspondingly on ACT, it would be math and english.

No, Navy only asks for Math and English from the ACT, not composite. AF, on the other had, uses all 4 components (it doesn't ask anywhere or show the composite itself, but the 4 separate sections).

And yes, it's English, not reading, for Navy.

I know there are a few more ACT / SAT testing dates before July. If a candidate is applying for the Class of 2015, realistically, how late into their
Senior year can they take an ACT test or SAT test to help admission before its really too late to help.

I would say the October testing dates. Yes, you can take it later and have those scores to USNA before the deadline of the application. But, realistically, if you have taken it and have some scores in, you want your "final" answer to be in their hands when they start receiving nominations from the MOC's. They will not sit on a slate until the application deadline on the outside chance that someone may re-take SAT/ACT's.

My advice: study and get it done by October.

These are the next test dates accoring to the College Board.

SAT: March 13, May 1, June 5 and one in October

ACT: April 10, June 12...not sure about fall test dates

I didn't mean to imply that I would WAIT until October to take the tests. I would take it early....and often! I have seen too many kids applying for various scholarships wait until October and then there's no time to retake if you don't like the results! I'd take the tests as a junior, in the summer and again in the fall if necessary. Some start earlier, just to get the hang of the test format.

Furthermore, I'd take both SAT and ACT. Some do better on one than the other. Only one way find out!

Both been taken, SAT Critical reading 600, Math 560, Writing 570. ACT English 26, Math 26, Reading 29, Science 24. Know the spring test dates but have heavy AP class load, service stuff and Club soccer. May take in spring (with prep work, have books, course material to look at) but if scores don't go up much, did not know if Oct would be too late, would have more time to prep.

I'd carve out some time to study and take them again in June. It's not easy...........if it was anybody could do it! And I would specifically target the math scores for improvement.

That's the rub...I am scheduled to attend second session of SLS (cannot do first that is during finals week and if I have noted schedule correct, SAT is during second week, ACT is day after SLS which may not be the optimal time to take...so bottom line, if I took in Oct that would not be too late to submit.

Are/did you call them to update scores? Or did you not apply for NASS? My son got his this morning too, and although his math went from a 36 to 35 , his English did go from a 28 to a 31. Does anyone think that's worth updating them with or have they probably already looked at them or will they not accept changes at this point anyway? Thanks!

Logically you would think so, but on the NASS application there is a link to instructions and at the bottom it states "ONCE AN APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED, GRADE INFORMATION, TEST SCORES, AND EXTRACURRICULAR PARTICIPATION CANNOT BE MODIFIED OR SUPPLEMENTED"

Yeah, you'd think I could read that before asking! Sorry, but thanks for the info - I won't have him bother calling them then!

Edited to add that I didn't think you were rude at all - just pointing out that I could have checked myself before asking!

I did not want to come across rude...I was surprised when I read that. I have read they are quite busy this time of year and I guess that's one way to limit calls.

I had the scores sent to them so hopefully it will update automatically? This was my first time taking it and I scored 33 English, 32 Math. Which is funny cuz math is my better subject.

Also, does anyone think with those scores it is worth taking it again?

I'd update.....

Those are very good scores. marciemi's son's scores are OUTSTANDING. Sure, you can re-take, but your scores are pretty darn good. Look at some prior class profiles (I don't think it is in 2013 profile) for info on standardized test scores.

Also, remember, it is the whole package: leadership, athletic ability, extra curriculars, GPA, class rank, type of high school (does your school produce lots of kids who attend 4 year college), recommendations from teachers, etc.
Test scores alone are not a good predictor of your chance of earning an appointment to USNA or any SA.

seeing that ur only a sophomore like me? dont just settle with what u have. Practice more and you will probably score better.
