overnight visit

I read that you have to have an LOA or appointment to get an overnight visit to West Point. My son is on the NWL for 2014. Any overnight visits possible if you are on the NWL and waiting?

My son just received confirmation of his overnight visit. It said on the candidate portal that overnight visits are offered only to those candidates who have LOA's or an appointment.

Pianist - not normally but he is welcome to call is Regional commander and inquire.

Even if an overnight visit is not possible - please make a day visit. Your son can go spend the day with a plebe, attend class and have lunch. You get a tour and afterward, you and your son can sit down with the Officer of the Day in admissions who will review and talk to your son about his package.

During an overnight visit, are any of those tours or Officer of the Day admissions talks available to parents? I just figured I wouldn't be able to go on campus.

You absolutely can. You and your Candidate will go to the admissions office at about 8:00 a.m. where you will meet other parents and candidates. An officer will give you a short briefing and then your candidate will be met by a Plebe and is off to do whatever it is they do. At that point another Cadet comes in and you can ask him/her any questions you might have. You are then given a tour of the base by yet another Cadet. If you are on an overnight visit you will pick your candidate up back at the admissions office and an appointed time the next day. You can then sit down with an Officer to go over your candidates file and have any questions answered about the admissions process or West Point in general.

do you think it would be ok to bring all those forms when you go out for the overnight?

While we can't speak to the day-visit, our family highly endorses the overnight-visit experience for anyone who is able to make the trip. Being exposed to the cadets was so special and informative to our boy. He learned so much about what would be expected of him. As parents we search for info and insight online and as we come across a tidbit that is new to us, we share it with him. About 98% of the time he tells us, "Oh yeah, they told me that when I was there." The bottom line result was that he is extremely comfortable with his choice; and even though he knows there will be challenges, he feels it is do-able for him and looks forward to being a cadet. All the credit goes to those cadets (and officers/instructors) that took their time from their other obligations to be so open to him.

By the way, we have found West Point to be very "parent friendly."
