I just wanted to let all juniors who desire to attend NASS but think that they are unable to due to tight family financial situations, not to give up. My family would not have been able to send me, so I contacted the academy making them aware of my situation. They were of immense help and payed for my flight and waived the fee. I don't know how often this happens, but don't give up until every stone is unturned.

That speaks well of you and USNA. It's heartening to know the Academy has these provisos.

USNA does have some funding for NASS scholarships. With all of the budget cuts, however, there is less money in the pot than there used to be so please don't count on this being an option for everyone. If you're accepted and truly can't afford to attend, contact USNA directly; they may be able to help you.

Another suggestion I've seen several times is to contact the AFL or VFW posts in your area about fundraising - many have been able to get funds that way. Or contact local businesses about sponsoring part of your trip - they get some publicity that way and you get some money. While $650 or so (including air) sounds like a lot to a high schooler, to many corporations that is a very small amount and depending on the perception of the military in your area, might be something a lot of companies would be willing to support.
