My son is a swimmer, though he will not be swimming varsity at the academy. I have a few questions:

Do they swim Plebe Summer?
Does the academy issue them a swimsuit?
Do they let them wear goggles?
Can they bring their own goggles?

Details, details

Thanks!

They will get bathing suits, but I don't know about goggles. And yes, they will swim.

If he's a h.s. swimmer, he may be able to validate some or all of the swimming requirements. He'll be offered the opportunity.

You get a really ugly swimsuit. I don't recall goggles being issued or that you could wear them, but it's been a long time and things may have changed.

As I recall the Plebe Summer swim was really a test to see if you can swim so they know whether you need remedial instruction.

As far as I know, if he was on the HS swimming team he will most certainly validate any swimming test.

my plebe son tells me that each year there is a swim test ... a high school swimmer should have no problem ... I think it was 200 yards in x time for plebes .. and my son nearly made it ... and he didn't do swim team.

they are required to wear the swim shorts provided ... unless they are home on leave. that means weekends at sponsor's pool in gear ...

don't know about the goggles ... unlikely to be allowed over plebe summer unless issued ... it seemed everything was dis allowed unless issued. you will, however, find out in time! congrats and good luck ..

Swimming for Plebes

Hi,
My son was also a swimmer in high school. He validated swimming, which is offered either semester (some take swimming and some take wrestling/boxing-alternating). Your son will have no difficulty validating, which is done the first day of class. However, his grade for the class will be based on his time for the swim. Not sure, but will ask and repost requirement for his "99". Also, the minimal time for passing, if he knows

Do they swim Plebe Summer?

They do swim during Plebe Summer, along with their Company, during designated times.
Does the academy issue them a swimsuit? The Academy issues them a suit
Do they let them wear goggles? They are issued goggles.
Can they bring their own goggles? Not really necessary and may get lost during I-day transition.

Thanks everybody. I knew all this year round swimming was bound to come in handy one day!

Validating times for Swimming

The Plebe just got back with me - record time! - The distance is 200 meters and the minimum time was 3:30. He ended up with a 2:45, he thinks, but said that was good enough for a 99. Hope that helps.

If they validate swimming, is there something that replaces it or do they get free time to study etc.??

Suzie, my plebe studies. With 20 units/week his plate is full enough as is. But somebody else may take up another class, I don't know.

That is great that they will let them study. I think I would opt for that too! Guess it pays to swim!!

I'm pretty sure they are issued cheap googles, but I don't think anyone would say anything if he used his own unless they are rediculous looking. Plus, the cadre really don't stick around during the swim classes.

Yes, there is a swim class during Plebe Summer. Usually averaged around once a week, sometimes twice a week. The Academy issues swimsuits, there's no way around it. I believe you can bring your own goggles. They never said anything against it.

Your son can validate his swim class second semester during the first lesson. In order to get an 80%, which is the lowest score you can get in order to validate, you have to swim a 200 in 3:30. In order to get a 100% with the validation, you swim it in 2:45. I definitely recommend validating it, as it will open up some free time, even if it's only one period a week.

Best of luck to your son.

Validation is for the class during ac year. Everyone does the drown proofing pool time during Plebe Summer. No specific stroke is required for validation. You just have to make the cutoff time for a "B" or better. Youngster year the validation distance is 400m. The slowest validation time is more than double the 200m time (you can be a little slower, but you must sustain it longer). DD wasn't fast enough to validate Plebe year (never was a swimmer), but validated this year.

Is there anyone currently on the varsity team. I planning trying to walk on and I want to know how getting up at five goes with everything else.
