"WASHINGTON (Army News Service, March 1, 2010) -- Soldiers deploying to Afghanistan will be issued the new "MultiCam" fire-resistant Army Combat Uniform complete with new Mountain Combat Boots and MultiCam-patterned Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment, or MOLLE, gear beginning in July."

About bloody time. It's long been known that Multicam is one of the best, if not THE best, general-purpose camouflage pattern anywhere. It is certainly infinitely better than the garbage ACU pattern.

There's a reason the SOF's were using Multicam; they use what WORKS, and they have the fiscal flexibility to get what they need.

Now, if the services would stop switching uniforms every 12 months, it would be a wonderful thing.

I hope they next get rid of the black beret and return it to the Rangers, who actually had to EARN theirs!

What I want to know is who in the Army PEO Soldier is losing their job over this boodoggle (adopting the ACU)? It's been apparent for a long time that the one size fits all approach to Camo in reality fit nobody. It wasn't until Congress got involved that suddenly the Army saw the error of its ways , admitted that it's intital tests demonstrated this outcome, that its testing in 2006 confirmed this as did the last round of tests. But- because it was only a bunch of Sgts and Junior officers telling them that the uniform was basically appropriate for a gravel quarry and no where else, it became one more example of the Natick and acquistion toads disregarding the field. There should be a few Generals , Colonels and SeS's who lost their jobs over this - but there won't be. You can see much the same thought process at work over the M4Carbine- a weapon that is clearly subpar compared to what is out there but someone in the Army has a vested interest in the concept of a technology leap - the soldiers are stuck with it.

Multi-cam is a HUGE improvement, IMO.
ACU pattern does not blend in very well at all. Multi-cam is one of the best patterns available.

Bruno, what would you suggest for a new carbine?

IMHO...if they decided upon a new carbine, I'd keep the AR receiver and go to the 6.8mm.

Oh wait, that's been tried...NOBODY wanted that caliber and we ARE a NATO nation...they love the .223, which is a good round...

THIS will open a HUGE can of worms...sorta like saying: "The M9 sidearm is a BIT large for the hand of MANY folks, we need something that fits better, carries a similar load..." and then the caliber arguments...

Such fun!

Grab a bag of popcorn and a coke and enjoy!

So far the HK-416 gets good reviews but expensive. Hate the 9mm for penetration but love the old 45 ACP. Hit them in the arm and hydrostatic shock does the rest.:thumb:

Hell, if we're going to be dreaming, bring back the M14 as a MBR and the 1911 as the standard sidearm.

ETA: I dunno...... That ACU sure is great......

Not to be picky but the ACU is the Army Combat Uniform and refers to the garments in fabric and structure. The digitized pattern is the Universal Camoflage Pattern - which I recognize that a lot of people don't like.
The ACU and the UCP were both designed for Iraq.
Bruno - isn't Iraq basically a big gravel pit?
The ACU differed from the BDU (and desert camoflage uniform) in not only pattern but in fabric, functionality and design.
It was tested on thousands of soldiers and in the field in Iraq before it was adopted Army wide.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think when our soldiers first went into Afghanistan post 9-11, our soldiers wore the BDU with the woodland pattern.
Now that we are back in Afghanistan - the realization was made (duh!) that the UCP was not appropriate. The Multi Cam is basically the ACU (with a few upgrades) in the Multi Cam pattern.

Old ROTC Instructor said he liked the M1-Garand the best. It would shoot through a tree and when you ran out of clips you could still beat them to death with the stock. Got to shoot the 1901 Springfield a couple of times and that was a great weapon for accuracy. Bolt action was not great for rapid fire.

It's not a matter of not liking it. It's that it sucks as a camouflage pattern. The sage green is entirely wrong and the pattern doesn't break up a person's outline anywhere near well enough.

I may have gotten UCP and ACU confused, though. I'm speaking strictly to the pattern, not the garment itself.

Multicam is the camouflage pattern itself. I have some gear with that pattern, and it's almost scary how well it will blend with a surprising number of different backgrounds.

I gotta get mine cleaned up.

My father-in-law has one of those.

Firing it is akin to engaging with light artillery.

Hmm...

Okay...here comes my list...

M1 Garand: I LOVE THIS RIFLE!!! I have a nice one, and I shoot it regularly in competitions and for fun. I love the ballistics of the .30-06 bullet. My Garand will shoot accurately (no scope) out to 1000 yds on a man-size silhouette.
And, FYI, this is the ONLY weapon that I know of that has a CLIP! All others are magazines!

M1903 Springfield: Another rifle I love!!! I have a really nice one, made just prior to WWII. It's one of the most accurate rifles I've ever had and if I could cycle the bolt faster, I'd consider it for competitions but...I'm not that fast with it. I have thought about putting a scope on it...then I think it'd be SCARY GOOD at 1000 yards or more! The limit would be the ballistics of the bullet.

Other superb rifles for long-range use?

Russian 1891/30 Moisin Nagant
Swiss K31
British SMLE in .303
Swedish Mauser 6.5x55

Gee...can't tell what one of my hobbies is, can you?

Zaphod, I just got back from my annual eye exam and with my eyes a little dialated still, looked at your picture. I think it caused an anuerysm followed by ten minutes of hysterical laughter. :jump1::groupwave:

BTW my S is having a good time this youngster year, thanks for the help and encouragement way back in the day.

M1 Thumb really hurt on "INSPECTION ARMS":yllol: Without a clip you had to use your thumb to depress the clip spring so the bolt would engage. If you were not fast enough your thumb would get caught between the bolt and the reciever. OUCH!

I am not sure the UCP was a bad camouflage for Iraq though. The soldiers who complained all wore it while in Afghanistan.
A lot of soldiers didn't like the ACU's themselves- not sure how they feel now that they have been wearing them for a while. The old die-hards likes to iron the BDU's!

But it NEVER happened more than ONCE!

:thumb: picture says it all. It's ideal camouflage for taking down a nursing home but not much else.
