Container Ship Strikes Scott Key Bridge in MD

The swing to starboard could also been caused when they put the astern bell on to try and stop the ship. With a single screw fixed pitch right-hand turning propeller the stern will 'walk' to port and the bow will swing to starboard when you back the engine.. The anchors aren't gonna do much good...

Container Ship Strikes Scott Key Bridge in MD

According to an online source I have, the MV DALI went through a routine Port State inspection by the US Coast Guard in the port of New York on September 13th 2023. No deficiencies were noted at that time. However on the previous Port State inspection in San Antonio, Chile on the 27th of June...

    Honest Question

My son did part of his second sea year onboard a Prepo ship in the 'Latin Lake'.. He got to spend some time in a lot of really great ports, like Caglairi, Sardinia, Gaeta, Italy, Palma, Spain [in the Balearic Islands] Heraklion, Crete and Split, Croatia. He joined that ship in Santa Cruz de...

    Honest Question

As my son walked the stage at graduation many years ago, I was struck that his expression was more one of relief than joy. He looked like he had just been paroled.

    Sea Year Recs

@theodore.broosevelt @kpmom2013 makes a couple of excellent points.. Many Chief Mates will give the cadet a pair of coveralls [AKA a boilersuit].. Generally we use to carry 10~15 pair in the Mates 'Gold Locker'.. However, it sometimes can be a crap shoot on availability or having a size that...

    Sea Year Recs

I would just get a good pair of Wells-Lamont leather gloves.. you don't need anything fancy. I used to wear the ones with the reinforced palm and elastic wrist.. but I've used the non-reinforced palm, ball and tape adjustable wrist gloves too and they worked fine.. You're not going to be wearing...

Is math at USMMA no calculator, calculator allowed, or a mix of both?

Here's what I was issued.. No batteries required. Halfway through my 2nd class year I saved up enough to go buy an HP-35 RPN calculator.. I remember it being a real lifesaver in my Spherical Trig class.. It made everything easy as 3.1415926.. 😉

    Items after INDOC

Yes, I had read that they had both passed away.. I loved sailing with Mike; Scott on the other hand took some getting use to, but he was still a good guy.. and yes, Scott lived on Kauai, up around Princeville.. Mike had been retired for some time and he and his wife owned an apple orchard up in...

    Items after INDOC

I would concur with what the others have said above.. It's probably best to wait until at least the Fall break before attempting to bring any of that gear to school.. and depending on how well you're doing academically [where your main focus should be] it might be even be better to wait until...

Wreck of the USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS [DE-413] found off the Philippines

Here's a couple more photos of the ROBERTS.. I'm amazed at how well preserved the ship is.. You can still clearly see her Measure 32 camouflage.. It also looks like her anchors stayed fairly snug up in the hawsepipes and that 5"/38 gun turret remained in place even after falling over 4 miles to...

Wreck of the USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS [DE-413] found off the Philippines

The wreck of destroyer escort USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS [DE-413], sunk by gunfire from Japanese battleships and heavy cruisers off Samar on 25 October 1944, has been located at a depth of roughly 22,600 feet. This surpasses the USS JOHNSTON [DD-557] as the deepest known wreck in the world.
