DS commissioned this past Friday. It was a long (6 years), winding road (started off as AFROTC and commissioned into the National Guard), but he finally made it. Did not end up where he expected, but happy nonetheless

DS has been a firefighter every summer, so this may be an option depending upon where you live.

DS was not selected for field training three years ago, and was allowed to switch to AROTC. They gave him credit for only one year so he picked up as an MS2 the following year.

Must depend on which group they were with. DS is 9th Regiment, says he is having a blast.

I agree it is very important to verify this info. I was specifically referring to the one company I spoke with, and was very surprised to hear this regarding being able to insure the vehicle without the insurable interest, as I used to be an insurance agent and was taught you couldn't insure...

I should also add that your child does not have to be contracted if the parent has an active USAA policy, so if mom or dad is active/former/retired military you can look into your own policy, and then would be able to split of DS or DD without them being contracted yet.

Wow, you sound like loyal customers! We also took out a student credit card with them with very low limit so DS can build his credit as he has no credit history.

Just something to think about for parents who still have their contracted cadets on their auto policy. DS just contracted a short while ago, so I was just able to split him off of our auto insurance policy and put him on his own with a company that specializes in insurance for military members...

DS just found out this week he is attending the last session starting mid-July.

Ok, gotcha, thanks! Sounds like he likely won't get the time slot he requests, which is a bummer as he is relying on his summer employment for tuition, and he would not take such a big income hit if he could go early and be done. I am sure a lot of other cadets are in the same boat, though...

Okay, I'm feeling a little "uneducated" here, but how does one find out which battalions are in which regiments??

jcleppe, I think my son's circumstance was a little different since he transferred over to AROTC (same battalion as your DS) after two years AFROTC - non scholarship (wasn't selected for SFT). As far as I know he has passed everything, but they told him the end of last year he wouldn't contract...

I also was under the impression cadets were required to contract before their MS3 year, but apparently I was mistaken as my DS is an MS3 and is not contracted yet. He was told he should contract next semester. I do not know about scholarships for this level either, but would like to find out...
