Nervous and Anxious about the Academy Please Give Me Some Wise Words

Take one or two key activities and challenge yourself in their leadership opportunities. Do well on your SAT. If you are interested in a sport at USCGA, make contact with the coach. This can sometimes help applicants who are on the border of admission decision. Take care in your essays...

    Hotels, Things to do

Mystic has a nice little downtown to walk, the Seaport, and the Mistic Village for walking around. Drive out to Stonington Point to see the lighthouse. Newport RI isn't that far and has the old mansion tours. Park near Salva Regina to do the Cliff Walk behind the houses and along the...

    Any Suggestions.....

While living in CT, we enjoyed the occasional shopping trip to LLBean home store in Freeport Maine. Lots to see and do along the way (and just another a few hours up the road from Boston). We also enjoyed the Normal Rockwell musuem in western Mass. Vermont is also great for cheese, maple...

Care Packages/Things for Parents to send

In case it hasn't been mentioned: SILVER SHARPIE for marking those dark items. Body Glide from a sporting store provided alot of relief.

    Importance of an interview?

Last year our child's application was sent into the RA stack from the EA stack. One of the things he scrambled to do was get an interview. Nothing else changed in the meantime-no new test scores, no more grades, etc. At this point, do everything possible to make the application stronger!

Is it ethical to buy a copy of the Running Light and memorize beforehand??

Having a Running Light ahead of time helped our appointee feel like he could prepare mentally in some way for Swab Summer. To him, it was like getting in physical condition to prepare for the challenges ahead. Why wait until you get there? I agree that memorizing the RL shouldn't be of a...

    JAG Corps

The gamble/payoff of being a SA grad and wanting law school is you will be competing at a higher level for those few spots. But in the end, you won't have any student loans and the pay/benefits go on while you are a student. Some JAG have also served their normal mission while attending law...

Army cook and single mom may face criminal charges

Her mother granted an interview to our local news. She currently has the baby. The single mother did not make the proper preparations thinking there was no way the Army would deploy her with a child in her custody. Even Grandma had no interest in caring for this child while her own...

How comparable is JO pay to a civilian career?

This is a perspective from 26 years down the road: The money you actually get deposited into your bank account each month is enough to live comfortably at that stage in your life. As a JO, you should only have minimal dependents and costs associated with. The money you actually received...

    Difficult Swab Summer

I'm sorry to hear about this experience. It's very difficult to accept disappointment when so random. Don't give up on the college courses. Your daughter might consider looking into online classes. Even our local community college has independent study online classes that can start at any...

Becoming a History/Economics Professor after the military?

CGA has a similar program. There are ways to continue your education while you are active too. If you have the time and find the right fit (local institution, online, etc), you can work on your education on your own time to prepare accordingly. Some active members take these steps...

    applications for USCGA

Keep in mind that many juniors attend several service academy summer programs, knowing that CGA is No. 2 or No. 3 on their preference list. It's not that they didn't get accepted to CGA, but they might have been accepted to another SA and taken that appointment over CGA. The stats are from...

    Question for Military Women

These are examples I have seen in the Coast Guard: Women who enjoy their 5 year commitment and then say it's time to move on to another role in life or in their family. They wouldn't trade the SA or 5 years for anything but they have another path to take and don't look back. They are...
