    Submarine Junior Officer

I apologize that I never replied to your question. Let me know if you would still like information about UMich NROTC.

    Submarine Junior Officer

It seems they do lots of "trainers" on different equipment than they have on their own boat. I am sure the training helps, but they still have to "re-train" on their actual equipment. My best to your DS!

    Submarine Junior Officer

I haven't been here in a while and thought I would post an update on our DS. After completing NROTC at University of Michigan, DS completed Nuclear Power School in Goose Creek SC, Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY and SOBC in Groton, CT. We have been fortunate to visit him in all locations! We...

    Commissioning Date

I reserved a house 2 years in advance for DS commissioning and graduation! I emailed the AirBNB landlord and he agreed to commit to us. This was in Ann Arbor MI; I imagine it will vary by person whether they are willing to reserve that far ahead.

    Base and boat assignment

Thanks kinnem, we are really looking forward to the time together. Funny thing is we had already planned a family dinner with our daughter's family this weekend, to incorporate Easter and a couple of birthdays. Now DS will be there too! Of course I get to go to the airport at midnight to pick...

    Base and boat assignment

These messages will really help me in conversations with DS. He is one to keep his feelings and emotions to himself except with me, so outward negativity will not be an issue - I am his sounding board and want to be able to see the bright side so I can offer encouragement. Since I have no...

    Base and boat assignment

What an inspirational reply - thank you so much; I loved the whole message, but especially the two quotes above. I have NO experience in this...nor does DS, so it is difficult to see the possibilities, only the 180 degree turn from where we thought he was going. I am so happy I posted here this...

    Base and boat assignment

Thank you so much for the response. This is actually more about me trying to figure out how to react appropriately and positively. He did already tell me, though he is disappointed about the turn of events, that decommissioning a boat is complex and requires knowledgeable people. On the plus...

    Base and boat assignment

Let me know if I should post this on a different thread. DS excelled in his ROTC unit. He graduated form Nuke School with honors and is ahead of the curve at Prototype especially enjoying and doing well with watches. The pipeline is backed up, so he doesn't know when he will actually work on...

Does NROTC make you use AP credit?

Agreed. DS was a Nuclear Engineering major and was able to start on his Nuke classes during his freshman year thanks to his HS credit (AP and dual enrollment). If not for the Navy classes and NROTC responsibilities, he could have graduated in 3.5 years. Many engineering majors need an extra...

US agrees to pay billions to Marines affected by toxic water

My dad was stationed at Camp Lejeune; I was born there during that time period and "lived" there for 18 months, including while my mother was pregnant with me. I am in the database and receive regular updates but I don't have any health issues so far.

    Parent to parent to candidate

My DS class had 50% attrition rate - started with 32, ended with 16. They were dropping up to the very last semester. The good news is that 6 went to Charleston together for submarines (5 from his graduating class, 1 was a year older - got his Masters's) and all did great at Nuclear Power...

    Where Are They Now?

DS graduated with Distinction from Nuclear Power School in Goose Creek, SC earlier this month. He was able to come home for a few days then drove to Saratoga Springs, NY where he moved into a house with 3 Ensigns he met at NPS. He reports today; we fully expect he will be stuck in a backlog...
