    Inspections

Yes, that would make sense. PMI isn't intended to be a "I don't have to clean my room" pass, but that's what it sometimes is in practice--more so with upperclassmen than plebes. A week of PMI is a lot, but definitely not unheard of. Also, as an addendum to my previous message: AMI switches to...

    Inspections

It's regiment-dependent, but generally speaking it's: SAMI: 2x a semester AMI: every weekday (usually graded 1-2x/week) PMI: every weekend and some weekdays on an as-earned basis There also are things called MAMI's, which is a kit layout w/a graded AMI--usually 1x a semester, if at all.

West Point Class of '65 leads parade

This is awesome. West Point wasn't too happy about it--their PAO channel put up a picture of it and then it was yanked down a few hours later. Props to the firsties who had the guts to pull it off so close to graduation!

    Healthcare at USMA

Assuming your eye exam is routine, it would be at the optometry clinic in Mologne Cadet Health Clinic in cadet area. The Army will not pay for contacts (excepting to treat a very few conditions), but they will pay for a pair of civilian glasses every year in addition to an issued pair of...

    usma food

It sounds like the OP is just curious about what (s)he'll be eating for four years at either SA. Their comment about the menu's relative "small significance" is probably a good indicator their decision to go to USMA or USNA won't come down to the fact that USMA serves chicken crispitos and congo...

    Academic Life After West Point

    Plebe getting a pass?

A plebe's pass request would go through three levels: cadet platoon leader, cadet company commander, and company TAC officer/NCO (if memory serves). It is nearly axiomatic that cadets always approve subordinates' pass requests--especially plebes. TACs rarely disapprove passes, unless a cadet...

New Officers’ Careers, Peace Is No Dividend

Frustrating I know the cadets quoted in this article, and IMHO their views are misrepresented. I've talked with them about the "peacetime Army," and the views I heard them express in conversation were nuanced, thoughtful, and frankly not the ones portrayed in the NYT piece. It is incredibly...

    Work Outs during Beast

You likely will not get the opportunity to lift during CBT. The only chance you might get would be near the end of second detail, in which your squad leader might make use of an extra hour or two of time after dinner in Arvin (the gym) to familiarize y'all with the IOCT and perhaps to work out...

Language Majors and the Service Academies

Thank you for correcting me on joint/combined operations. The things Firsties don't know these days... I agree that a language major's utility is not as immediately evident ias an engineering major. The latter is certainly better-compensated in the civilian world than the former. I...

Language Majors and the Service Academies

I respectfully disagree. Language is an important skill for an Army officer to pursue (or at least study) for two reasons: 1) It is part of a liberal, broadening education An Austrian philosopher said, "The limits of my language are the limits of my universe." Understanding a foreign...

    Graduate school?

Coltron, I am a Firstie at USMA that tried to attend graduate school after graduation. Below are West Point’s three current options for graduate school. Per Army regulations, cadets may only attend graduate school immediately after graduation if it is fully funded. There are three...

    Service Slection Question

This year, 127 cadets selected military intelligence as their top choice branch. There were only 88 MI slots.

    Regimental Staff

Regimental Staff is the group of 20ish cadets that were selected to serve on a staff that is responsible for running and tracking day-to-day operations in a regiment (~1,100 cadets/regiment). Generally, being selected for staff is a compliment, albeit an undesired compliment for some...
