Our DS commissioned last year out of CP and had to put his top 5 choices into Cadre/Cadet Command. Had a decent OML ranking in the unit and wanted Infantry. Put in ADSO in case he needed it. Turns out he did not, Signal selected him and branch detailed him to Infantry until Captains Career...
As far as I am aware there are no summer training opportunities for incoming freshmen. Turtle is correct in that there is a summer training(Basic Camp) avail between freshman and Soph year at Ft. Knox and Advanced Camp at Ft. Knox between junior and senior year. There may be other summer...

Here's a link to 8th Reg Basic Camp with General Luckey. May see your cadets in the photo. Not sure if this is all the Cadets but looks like three platoons worth.
It's Flickr and you can scroll through a bunch of close up photos. Download...
DS did Spartan as well says was amazing. He placed 72 overall, 44 in 2o yo group. Said the heavens opened up on them while at tent city. He said never seen rain like that before! Glad to hear your son having a good time and enjoying experience!
@Turtle:
DS says been a good experience thus far. Sounded tired but happy. He's been PSG and now PL so good chance for him to experience both aspects of leading and managing up to 35 kids.
He did mention that a cadet quit during one of the layouts...don't know if from his platoon or not. He was...
DS traveled in khaki shorts(it was hot) and his Army green Polo shirt. Weather into Chicago delayed his arrival into Louisville until 8:50 or so last night. Cadre were there to greet them, gather them all up, and get them to Knox. No word from him since I've landed. I'm sure he's busy.
DS, Rising MSIII just rec'd travel orders today. 8th BDE west coast school. He's excited to head out and has a completely open mind about what to expect.
Ds was just awarded 3 year scholarship. HS was 3.57, 2100 SAT but he worked his butt off to rank 4th in his unit and I believe that had a lot to do with it.
Some advice I can offer is for your DS to be himself in his interviews. BGO's and MOC committees can tell if someone is faking it. Have him tell you the WHY of attending-not just because it's a good school or I want to play this sport for them...and always consider that USNA is just one step...
No one can tell you your DS's chances for admission. Only the admissions Board, then Office will ever know that.
He should focus on putting together the best package he can including SAT/ACT scores, grades, EC and Sports. No need to volunteer at a MOC office just conduct himself well in his...
