    Injuries are driving me nuts

Reach out to a local physical therapist -- ours gives a free "screening" -- frankly they spend 30-40 minutes evaluating an injury and have much better insight into what needs to be done to fix the cause -- if necessary they will refer you back to a doctor. A cortisone shot is just addressing...

    Hello from an excited Mom

Sounds great, but why would your son not attend Boys State? My son was wary of it going in, but made some great friends and learned to work with a diverse set of kids -- a key question people had on many college applications, not just for the Academies. And of course Boys State adds to the...

Accepted to the Air Force Academy - Desperately want to stay in the Navy

There are opportunities to cross-commission from one academy to another service. I'm not sure what the rules are, but I would expect it would be highly selective and may also depend on a mutual "trade" (i.e. in your case, a middie wanting to join the Air Force too).

NROTC scholarship but not yet accepted to MIT

I have a pal who went to Notre Dame 20 years ago and was told explicitly he was accepted because of the ROTC scholarship. What school would not want full tuition without the hassle of trying to collect or manage financial aid.

Asked if I would accept an Appointment

It's funny, when people are looking for a job, they forget that the guy on the other side of the table has needs too -- they are looking for someone and they do not want to be rejected. In many situations, I have done this myself and advised others to do it -- if there is a job you would take...

    Class Attendance

During the tour at West Point, I got the impression that it was not uncommon for professors to cancel classes. For example if there is a paper due, or a problem set in math class, or a big test coming up, attending class would be optional -- though the professor would be available to assist the...

    Are Mids Happier?

I hate to cross-post, I put this in the USNA forum already, but I'd like to put this here for people who look only at this forum.... ----------------------------------------------- My son has appointments to both USMA and USNA. Over the Fall we did a day visit to West Point and a few weeks...

    Are Mids Happier?

My son has appointments to both USMA and USNA. Over the Fall we did a day visit to West Point and a few weeks ago he did a CVW at Navy. His observation was that the Mids seemed happier -- is there any evidence of this? I think this may be because his observations were different. During a...

Multiple Offers? What are your thoughts?

My son has a choice between USMA and USNA. Going into this whole process his interest had always been USMA -- I encouraged him to apply to USNA just in case. We had done a day visit to USMA in the Fall. He got his BFE from USMA first and was 90% sure that's where he would go -- when he got...

    Directly from High School

I'm curious -- I heard at West Point, only about 70% of the plebes are directly from high school -- the other 30% coming from prep school/college or enlisted ranks. Any idea what this number is at Annapolis?

    Candidate visitation weekend

Attended the CVW this past weekend and was very surprised. My estimate was that about 200 kids attended. They had the seniors break out and there were only 20 or so seniors -- the vast majority were juniors.

    Different Nominations

It seems they are referring to the same thing. Congressmen in the House represent districts.

    Therapy

I might suggest if you are looking for Psychological Therapy (vs. Psychiatric) you MAY not have to disclose it. The Present Health Questionnaire on the DoDMERB website asks if you have received any Medical, Psychiatric or Dental care since your last DoDMERB exam. Psychiatrists make a clear...

    Congressional vacancies

Depends on the district our FFR said he expects 4-5 kids from this district to get appointments. He also said there were some MOCs in the city of Chicago that in the past did not even nominate kids. Good luck!

Phone call from MOC stating appointment granted but no BFE yet

Could not agree with you more. Got an email initially from our MOC about my son's appointment and all I could imagine is how these things go wrong, get mis-communicated, etc.. It was another thrill getting that nice formal appointment! From what I've read here, I think the "standard" is the...
